Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum, but not new to Nissan. I own a 2005 Titan LE 4x4, as well as our newest acquisition, a 2012 Rogue SV AWD, which we purchased brand new in July of 2012. Earlier this week, I was changing the oil on the Rogue, and I noticed a fluid stain on the transmission casing. Our car has 24,000 kms on it (approximately 15k miles). I assumed a bad seal, since the fluid stain is near a gasket at the bottom of the transmission. I took the rogue into the dealership and they found that the fluid leak originated from a crack in the CVT casing, and they will have to replace the CVT. I have read lots of reports of CVT issues with Nissans, and generally the symptoms seem to be lack of acceleration when the CVT enters limp mode due to high temperature. I am sure that if I didn't notice the fluid leak during the oil change and my wife just kept driving, that once the fluid reached a certain level, that this would have occurred. We had none of those symptoms, but the dealership told me the fluid was at low level and they had to top it up. They gave us the car back until the new transmission comes in some time next week. Anyway, I'm not here to whine and complain, and I'm sorry that my first post is about a major failure, but I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of this kind of issue? I can't help thinking that this type of manufacturers defect might have contributed to other CVT failures. With the exception of the rear end, my Titans drivetrain has been rock solid for 9 years and 200k kms of heavy use, so I won't lie and say that I am not disappointed that our Rogue needs a new transmission after only 24k kms. At least the dealer is looking after us and installing a brand new CVT under warranty. Again, sorry about my first post being about a problem, but this seems to be the most informative forum for Rogue owners and I wanted to find out if this has happened to anyone else. Thanks in advance for your responses.

I would have bet money you were going to say it was the rear main seal. Mine failed at 8k miles, and I know there have been others too.

As far as an actual crack in the CVT...I think that is a new one. As much as I like to jump Nissan's s*** for failures, I think this really may just be that one in a million kind of thing. Hey, at least you are getting a new CVT while still under warranty, that is nothing to sneeze at.

Hope the new one works as it should.

Well I hope you are right about it being a one in a million failure. Out of all the vehicles we test drove, my wife liked the Rogue best, and I was hoping we could keep it for many years to come. This has been our only real issue with the car so far, and hopefully once we get the new CVT installed next week that we can get back to enjoying the Rogue and not guzzling gas in my Titan to run errands.
