Parking Meets Its Match: 2012 Nissan Rogue Is First Vehicle in Class to Offer Innovative Around View® Monitor

– Nissan's Popular Compact SUV Adds Four-Camera Parking Assist System to SL Package –

When it comes to favorite things to do in a car, parallel parking likely ranks right down there with mobile root canals. Until now. With the addition of the highly innovative Around View® Monitor to the 2012 Nissan Rogue, drivers can maneuver into parking spaces with more ease. Rogue is the first non-luxury vehicle in the United States to offer the unique Around View® Monitor feature, which is available as part of the optional Rogue SL Package.

"More driver's license tests have probably been failed due to the applicant's inability to parallel park than any other task," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. "It's anxiety provoking at best, and risks damage to a vehicle and surrounding property at its worst. Around View® Monitor now comes to Rogue drivers' rescue."

Rogue's Around View® Monitor utilizes four small superwide-angle cameras – mounted on the front, side mirrors and rear of the vehicle – to provide a virtual 360° view of objects around the vehicle, helping the driver maneuver it in tight spots. The system converts image data taken by the four cameras to create and display the virtual image of the vehicle from above.

The system has been designed to be easy-to-see, easy-to-use and easy-to-understand. The virtual overhead view makes it easy for the driver to position the vehicle for parallel parking, with the front/rear view enabling the driver to simultaneously confirm the front or rear of the vehicle. When the transmission is shifted into drive from reverse the system automatically switches to the previous screen.

By displaying the rear view and front-side view simultaneously, the driver can easily confirm the two most worrisome areas; the rear and front passenger side of the vehicle.

Views shown on the split-screen display can be changed as desired through use of a button on the center console. For example, front and side or rear and side views can be shown together to help gauge the distance of the Rogue to the curb.

"Unlike complex systems that take complete control of the parking function, Rogue's Around View® Monitor allows the driver to remain in charge – with a heightened view of the vehicle's surroundings," said Castignetti. "It's amazing technology, an amazing innovation, and we're proud that Rogue is the first vehicle in its segment to offer it."

A back up camera is a great convenience but this takes it to far, If you can't parallel park don't drive at all. Watching my step mom parallel park is hilarious and yup shes bad at driving in general too.

300winmag...although I agree with your sentiment re: "If you can't parallel park don't drive at all"...I must say, as a person with well over 10 yrs of driving experience and a parallel parking champ (I live in Brooklyn NY...think, squeezing a 109 inch SUV into 111 inches of space w/o camera aid in the rain)...I just bought a 2012 Rogue SV/SL pack with this function......its nice to have...very nice...almost to a point of distraction...but convenient. At least I will worry less when my wife has to park this car (she parkis by sound and feeling -> thinks (Bang! Sqeek = too far or too strong).

I think this idea is great. It gives another driver additional help in not hitting my car. Unfortunately beside the Rogue, it is mostly in expensive vehicles where people are usually careful with their cars anyways. Too bad they are not in most cars. :tisk:

It also gives another angle for obstacles around the car instead of just the usual back up cam which is still very good. Think a crawling baby or walking child just out of view of the back up cam and heading towards your rear area. Also other items in the general vicinity. :ohno:

Especially since the Rogue is notorious for it's blind spots makes it another option to give the driver more confidence in not hitting something. :woot:

So Could you change the camera pointing to the side so when you switch lanes you don't have to look?

I think it's a great idea, and not (just) for parallel parking. You never know when a kid, a dog or an inattentive coworker on his cellphone is going to walk behind you at the wrong moment. Although the Rogue has excellent rear visibility compared with the Chevy HHR we have at work (don't ask me why - I really think we lost a bet with the main office.) Heritage High Roof? They really should have called it the Chevy CSO - Can't See Out.

Snookie, I can't agree that the Rogue has excellent rear visability. Those sewn in rear headrests (how cheap can they get) block too much of the rear view. I really feel uncomfortable using the rear view mirror because of the blind spots. I wish I could get that changed. The new 2012 needs to have that top rear Nav Display while driving. Then again maybe the newer Rogue has the removable headrests.

The cameras do not work while driving, lol. I must say that I love the around view though! Helps when I'm not sure if I'm inside the lines in the teenie tiny spaces at work. That is actually why I traded my 09 in for a 12. After a mishap in the mall parking lot where I bumped a small car while backing up(I looked in all my mirrors and was turned around looking out the back and couldn't see the little car, I dented my bumper and her license plate) I knew a needed at least a rearview camera. So a month later when I was at the dealership with a friend who was picking up her new sentra and I said I was jealous of her reaview camera, a salesman asked me if I was interested in trading up to a 2012 with a camera, when I seemed reluctant he said he could keep me at the same payments(not knowing what my payments were!). I jumped at the deal knowing that I was getting a steal!
I put all 4 cameras to good use! The side ones help me determine if I'm in the lines, and the front I use to know how close I am(helps when I have to use the "compact car" spots at work and I don't want the rear sticking out too far in the aisle). And of course the rear camera makes a HUGE difference when backing up! I couldn't believe how wrong I was in knowing how close I was to things when backing up.
Only bad thing is that the side cameras are useless at night unless you are in an extremely well lit area.
I will admit that I had an extremely ditsy moment the first time I went to back up and it was raining  It took way too long for me to figure out why I couldn't see...
