So I finally got the m56 several days ago, has 70k miles. Now during the 'new car' period trying to see if anything is wrong with it.

One of the first things is clicking and rattling sounds...

Clicking happens every time I press or let go of gas, not sure if that's normal or supposed to be that loud.
Rattling happens on every gear during acceleration at about 2.5-3 rpm, only during that range.

Here's the video of both: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffi_GCZxdoY

please let me know if any idea what that is and if I need to bring it back to the dealer that graciously gave me 3k powertrain warranty... (hopefully nothing serious)
I also did get extended warranty through Protective, so if anything, can always do a claim, but hope it's something I can tinker with.

Thanks!

That clicking is super loud. There is no way it is supposed to do that. Does the pedal click like that when depressed and released even when the car is off?

When the car is off there is no sound. When the car is on and parked or neutral there is no sound. More evident in 1st and 2nd gears while accelerating.
Reading other Infiniti threads and sticking my head further out the window I think it might be a rear axle click, according to this TSB:
http://www.infinitig37.com/TSB/ITB13-008.pdf
So it should be taken care of by Infiniti (I hope) once I bring it in.
If you think it might be something else, keep comments coming!

As far as the rattling noise - I narrowed it down to between 2-2.5 rpm, instead of 2.5-3. Happens in all gears. I wonder if it's around exhaust or something?
Took a better video of what it sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqq-OvX-WHc

Thoughts?

Might be the heat shield rattling or something like that.

The axle click sounds plausible. I had a similar click issue on my Forester when going into reverse and back into drive.

Now that rattle sounds very unusual. Sounds like a rattlesnake or a pressure cooker releasing steam. :chuckle:

I agree that its probably exhaust related. If its easy to reproduce they should be able to locate and correct it fairly easy.

Yeah I will lift it up and check to see if anything is out of whack. Have been spoiled by warranty for several years, now time to break out the tools again! Had modded evo X several years back, so can't be too bad to work on this one.

Have we considered engine mounts, especially if it's happening when you hit the gas and release it?

Hm, good point. Although I am starting to believe the noise is coming from the rear, I will be checking those as well. Thanks!

So just got back from the dealer. The clicking sound was indeed the axle and they did use the TSB that I posted earlier. Charged me $100.

As far at the rattlesnake noise - they said they will need 2-3 hours to figure out what it it, but they think it might be coming from the cat or somewhere around there..
I will raise the car up myself over the weekend and see if anything can be tightened, as I don't want to shell out 200-300 for "lets see if this works" for a couple of hours, but might have to if to no avail.

Check for leaks, loose shields, etc.

I couldn't get the video to play, but the 5.6's are known for timing chain issues. They sound like a whining noise when revving. Is that what your noise sounds like? In this picture, you can see how stretched the chain on the passenger side is. The tensioner is maxed out and the chain is rubbing on the oil jet.

How often does that happen? If it hasn't happened in 70kmi, will it happen later?

The 5.6 in that pic had 42k on it. I've done them as early as 22k.

I can't say it's whiting, it's like a rattlesnake sound. The guys at dealership pinpointed around 2400 rpm where it does it while parked too.
Would timing chain be considered an engine part and covered under extended warranty?

Crap. Mine is at 66k. How much would this cost to get checked just in case and replaced on the spot if needed?

Sorry, just saw this reply. This forum isn't too cell phone friendly. Really, the only way to diagnose the issue is to have a whining noise when revving the motor cold. It generally goes away when warm, or doesn't sound as bad. I will say, it's MUCH more common on QX56's, and that's all I've ever replaced them on. The service bulletin includeds M56's though. Out of warranty is a very expensive repair, somewhere around $4,000. Your Elite warranty will cover it though.

I'll have to record a video because I do have a whining noise but not sure if it's the same one. I'll post a thread later.

Bumping this thread as my search yielded this post..

So, I took a look at this ITB and it seems like a 5 minute job in my own garage. Has anyone had luck fixing the rear axle click? Did you use that same oil or some other oil? Mine is doing it a LOT now. Just over 100kmi on my car. Basically when the car moves forward or back for the first time, even if it's just a half-foot as I let off the brakes, it'll click.
