Post

Hello everyone!

My 2005 base model Mazda Tribute's engine died last week, and today I purchased a 2011 Rogue SL with 31k miles, clear car fax report - just off a lease. I purchased an extended warranty for 3 years /36k with it. and I'm very excited about it, but I do have a few questions that in my (albeit brief) perusal of the handbooks was unclear about. I'm hoping some of you can give me clear responses about these - especially given that this is my first car with these amenities. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

(please answer any, all or part of these questions - again, TIA)

1) How do I program the address book for my Nav/GPS?
2) Is the USB adaptor in the console just for ipod for sound, or can I use that for charging my cell phone?
3) how reliable is this rear window camera?
4) do I need to subscribe to a satellite thing for traffic to work on the Navigation?
5) How is Navigiation updated?
6) Can I use bluetooth tech to text - using voice technology? If so, how?
7)How do you program radio channels and the clock?
8) any tips or suggestions for upkeep? part of my financing has given me 4 free oil change a year for the lifetime of the car. I am spending a lot of money, and I want the car to last as long as possible.

Again, Much much thanks for your input!

Any questions I answer about the nav system will be based on the presumption that you have the same stock head unit that came in my 2013 SV with premium package.

1) Just enter the address as if you were going to drive there. Then save it. It's very simple and similar to any Garmin GPS.
2) I've never tried charging any electronic device using the USB port in the console. I have a 64GB USB flash drive loaded with music that I just leave in there and never touch. The dividing tray that separates the top half of the console from the bottom half prevents any stuff from banging into the flash drive, so it never gets dislodged. If you have to charge your phone, just get a 12V DC charger and use one of the lighter-style power ports. There's one on the dash just under your heater/AC controls and another in the center console next to the USB port. I don't have an ipod or even a smartphone, so I've never used the ipod integration feature. I believe a simple USB cable connecting the port to your device should be sufficient if you want to use it for that purpose. There should also be a 3.5mm stereo input jack next to the USB port that can also be used.
3) It mostly works as designed, which is my opinion isn't too great. You have to get used to the way it distorts distances, particularly if you're on a hill and/or if you're turning while going in reverse. I'm a traditionalist and I actually turn my head around and look at the road when I'm driving in reverse, same as the way I look at the road when I'm driving forward. Be careful if you use auto headlights. One time in the early evening, the headlights came on and dimmed everything on my dash because the area in front of the vehicle was dark, while facing east. However the setting sun behind me was burning directly through the rear window, washing out the dimmed camera image being displayed on my head unit. I couldn't see a thing. If you hit the little button with the sun and moon at the very top-left of the head unit while the headlights are on, it will un-dim the brightness of the head unit. Hit the same button again to go back to default.
4) yes
5) very expensively by purchasing an updated SD card from a Nissan dealer that slides into the slot right there on the front of the head unit - I believe the dealer has to program/activate/install it, so you can't just buy it and slide it in yourself.
6) I have no idea
7) Radio stations are easy to program. You just tune to the desired station and hold the number you want to program it to for approximately two seconds until you hear a beep. Programming the clocks (one in the head unit and one in the dash) are also really simple and self-explanatory. You should have no trouble doing this on your own if you just go into the proper menu.
8) Read about CVT fluid changes and make sure the fluid level is not too high and not too low. It's basically reliable when properly maintained, but it's very delicate and sensitive if the fluid level is not absolutely perfect or if any foreign substance remains inside the CVT after a flush. Read here first. replace-your-cvt-yet-i-did-t591979.html There's a link in one of my posts there to another thread that discusses it in even greater detail. Since yours is just off-lease and just passed the 30,000 mile mark, there's a chance the dealer may have already flushed the fluid. If this is the case, there's really no way to determine if there are microscopic amounts of non-approved fluid remaining in the transmission. In all likelihood, any problems caused by non-approved fluid remaining after a flush will not show up for tens of thousands of miles, and you'll be well out of warranty by then. The only way to really be sure is to flush it again using actual NS-2 CVT fluid to flush it. At $15-20 per quart, that's expensive.
