I have a Rogue SV with the factory rails installed and am looking to get crossbars to mount roof rack systems (kayaks, bikes, etc). The owners manual says the load limit is 99 lbs and shows it with the OEM crossbars. Any idea if the low load limit is due to the roof to rail, rail to crossbar, or crossbar strength (weakness)? The fit guide for Yakima and Thule crossbars give a load limit of 168 lbs and their crossbars appear much stronger than the OEM crossbars, suggesting it may be the crossbar strength that is the problem.
I am looking at an estimated 150-160 lbs loading and will spring for the extra cost if the weakness is the OEM crossbars and the Yakima rack will get me to 160. I might even go so far as to replace the factory rails, if it will get me there. But if the weakness is the roof-rail attachments, I guess I'm stuck.
Any advise would be appreciated.
