why wont you go buy the cover? if a droplet of water gets in, and connects two circuits - your in trouble.

are you sure the A/C compressor clutch doesent click on?
the first things you should check is the r134a level on the L(low) line. (if the level is to low it wont click on. if the level is to high - it wont get cold, and stay warm.)
do you need an explanation on how to do this?

you have to buy this can with the gauge:

turn the car on, turn the a/c on to full-high. install the plug from the bottle hose and attach it to the L (low) pipe.

start pushing the bottle button and dispensing the R134a coolant until you reach the BLUE zone on the gauge.

see what happens.
(if it still doesnt, then you need to figure out if your clutch is getting the proper electrical signal)

the pressure switch which is located on the dryer/accumulator senses when the refigerant level or pressure is low and shuts off the compressor to prevent catastrophic failure of the compressor due to possible lubricant loss.

i would refill it with that bottle i just showed you, and see if the sensor starts sending a signal again.

if that doesnt work,
you obviously have to get the compressor running. there may be other ways but the way i do it is to make a little jumper out of a paper clip that will plug into both holes of the pressure switch plug that i mentioned earlier. this will lock on the compressor once you reset the electronic control panel in the dash and the only way I've found to do this is to simply disconnect the negative battery terminal. this will get rid of the flashing ac symbol but it will also delete your radio preset stations. you can now proceed to recharge the system and check for leaks etc. if you do this yourself be sure to remove the jumper in the pressure switch plug and reconnect it to the pressure switch when you get thru charging the system.
Jump the switch by pulling the connector, then us a jumper with to bridge the two terminals in the harness connector.

it depends what the problem is.

TO TEST JUST THE AC PUMP/CLUTCH.
Take a piece of wire and connect one end to the +(plus) of the battery and the other end to the plug for the a/c compressor ( there's only one wire that goes to the compressor). Your basically jumping the compressor to see if it comes on. If it does place your can of r134 on there and charge it up. It should be fine after that.

1. If you jump the compressor and still does not turn on - its dead.

2. if you jumped 12v to the clutch and it came on and while on. you connected the r134 and charged it then reconnected the plug to the compressor and the ac still does not come on that means your hi/lo pressure switch on your receiver/dryer is bad.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TO TEST THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.
or VERY short periods of time you can check the compressor by bypassing this pressure switch (jump the 2 pins with a wire) and the compressor should kick on and run normally... dont do this for more than a minute or so though. cross the 2 prongs and the compressor thinks theres enough freon in the system and runs.

check your A/C pump first:
