Hi!

I'm new to the forum so hopefully this isn't a repeat topic.

My 2011 Quest SL recently started shaking when I'm stopped. It goes back to normal when I'm driving through.

The check engine light is on, so I took it to Autozone and they pulled code P0021 and their printed receipt said Intake valve timing (IVT) control circuit failure bank 2. Probable causes: IVT control solenoid open or shorted, cam/crank sensors out of phase, dirt buildup at control valve. The Autozone guy said it could be low oil or sensors, so I went and had the oil changed.

Nissan dealership was booked until next week, so I took it to Firestone. Firestone mechanic said camshaft and crankshaft sensors checked out fine and said that he thinks the timing chain jumped and wanted to started tearing into it. I wasn't too thrilled about them tearing into the engine so quickly without a second opinion.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to be stranded with my 2 little boys.

Thanks!

You are right on the money by not letting anyone tear into the engine so quickly. It's way too early for that. Unfortunately, this isn't an open and close type of case. A number of things can cause these codes to be triggered, even though the report says it's one thing - it may be another.
I would start by looking for a simple vacuum leak: A loose vacuum line, slightly loose/cracked open air filter box, a hole in a pcv line - all of these things could cause the rough idle and set off a CEL (check engine light). If none of these can be found, I would go straight to the dealership with it, and leave it with some folks who are most likely to have seen this type of problem before and are possible already familiar with it.

Sorry for not posting sooner. Took it to the dealership and it ended up being a variable valve timing solenoid I believe. The paperwork just had timing solenoid written on it.

Thanks!
