Ok so the nissan national convention has been going on for many years, it travels across the country and I have yet to be able to attend one...

NJMSP is cool because its a REAL track... I think its around a mile long!

Image

Bubba (the guy who kept the clock at carlisle, is a driving instructor and goes there often)

Darryl will chime in on the hotel deal, and I know to drive the track its going to be a bit more money, somewhere around the $200 price point.

Considering none of you really drove on the track at carlisle, this would be a much bigger event, and a REAL track experience... (dangeris has rode his bike there)

Hey guys, NJMP's two tracks are both very nice, and their facilities are very good. I believe Nissan's using the Lightning course, which is 1.9 miles long, 10 turns. Fast, fun, and easy to learn. It's a nice opportunity..

Bubba, thanks for the heads up. What would be the protocol for those who have never drove this track before? I heard they have "ratings" system for drivers and you need to drive with an instructor first, etc? Good seeing you at Carlisle again!

Great seeing you too. I believe NASA is running the track school that day, which is an organization I have not worked with yet. Each organization has its own way doing things, but if it's like most other HPDE's, the students will likely be grouped based on their track experience (as in # of track days they've done at that track plus others).

First timers to a big track would likely have an instructor with them every time they go out on the big track throughout the day. More experienced students typically start the day with an instructor, but some might get "signed off" to run solo later in the day based on the instructor's assessment.

I suspect the helmet/tech requirements will be similar to Carlisle, but more strictly enforced. For example. some schools have a checklist of items they want a professional mechanic to inspect and sign off on before you show up. It's all in the name of safety, as you'll be going much faster than at Carlisle, plus the track sessions are more likely to be 20-30 minutes at a time as compared to the 1 minute sprints we did at Carlisle.

I''m sure they'll lay it all out for you. It's really a fun experience and well worth the money. It's also quite addicting . :bigthumb:

Thanks for getting the info up. I will be making this a dedicated forum in the next couple weeks for the event. Also, since I have attended every convention since 2000, I can probably answer most of your questions ;)

Wait until I get an event forum up for this first though, so I can answer a ton of questions all at once. Then, if you have any more beyond that, I'll be happy to answer them!

Also, like Bubba said, if you have not done a full track event before, even though it is more expensive than an autocross like Carlisle, it is well worth the money. The amount of track time you get will wear you out. Also, beginners will be required to have an instructor in the car like Bubba said.

Oh and also, I forgot to mention, as far as hotels...

The event coordinators for this event are still working on finalizing a hotel deal, but I highly recommend staying wherever they get a contract with, not just for the price, but for the hanging out. We usually have a conference room set up for the event where we do the meet & greet at the hotel, and sometimes we even do a pre-trackday driver's meeting, mainly for the beginners to answer questions and explain how it all works.

You don't need a fast car to drive on the track. Driving the track is about 98% driver skill and 2% car.
