About a month ago, when my wife pressed the brake and the start button on our 2011 Altima, all the dash lights came on but the car did not start. She let go of the brake and the start button, but the lights on the dash stayed on and the car appeared to be dead, except for the dash lights energized. She got out and tried to lock the car, but the power locks did not work. She called me, and I brought a spanner set with me. I disconnected the +ve terminal from the battery and after 30 seconds, reconnected it. The dash lights went out and after that the car started normally after that for several weeks.

Then this incident repeated itself last week.

I do not want to go to the dealer until the problem can be reproduced as I have no expectations that they will be able to help on such an elusive problem.

It seems that I have to "pull the power plug" to reset the computer, somehow. Has anybody else had this experience?

Thanks

My guess would be the battery somehow. Nissan uses the worst OEM batteries ever, I had to replace the one on my 2010 last winter, fortunately they pro-rated the battery since it was so soon so I only had to pay about half price for it.

I followed up on this. It turns out that this is a common problem. There is a Nissan Technical Service Bullitin for this. It is TSB-NTB12-041.

FYI another way this problem shows up is that the engine refuses to turn off! Only way to turn it off is to pull the fuel pump fuse. All of us better learn the location of the fuel pump fuse!

Folks
Does anybody know there the fuel pump fuse is on this vehicle? It does not seem to be in the fuse box on the bottom left of the steering wheel. Also how does one open the top of the fusebox (I presume it is a fuse box!) next to the battery?
Thanks

There are two clips on the front and firewall side of the box (the narrow ends). Look at them closely as they operate a bit differently then you would think just reaching in. Open the clips and pull the fuse box cover straight up. It's easy once you've done it once.

The fuse layout is silkscreened on the inside top of the cover.

There are two alignment clips on the long sides of the box, make sure these are engaged when you replace the cover. It may take a bit of jiggle to get it aligned.

Thanks! BTW I took it to the dealer and he reprogrammed the computer as per TSB-NTB12-041 at no charge! You guys should do it too, otherwise this problems happens at the most in convenient time!
