Anybody know where to get them and the final drive ratio? Nissan sure as heck isn't forthcoming with any info.
I wonder if the car was designed to go over 55 mph?

You must be talking about a your Versa, because I know you're certainly talking about a Z. Need me to move this for you? :)

But, to answer your question, the 370's final drive is 3.692. Here's a complete rundown on the gearing...

1st - 3.794
2nd - 2.324
3rd - 1.624
4th - 1.271
5th - 1.000
6th - 0.794
Reverse - 3.446
Final Drive - 3.692

...and a link to the NICO Club FSMs.

WOW! That's amazing, but what I expected. The 370Z with 6 sp manual is USELESS! Only a race car driver or a fool would purchase this POS!
I guess they are selecting these ridiculous ratios to get people to purchase the automatic transmission.
No wonder Nissan is close chested with this info.
Thank you for the information.

It seems that your car is projecting. ;)

pro·jec·tion (pr-jkshn)
n.
1. The act of projecting or the condition of being projected.
2. A thing or part that extends outward beyond a prevailing line or surface: spiky projections on top of a fence; a projection of land along the coast.
3. A plan for an anticipated course of action: "facilities [that] are vital to the projection of U.S. force . . . in the Pacific" (Alan D. Romberg).
4. A prediction or an estimate of something in the future, based on present data or trends.
5.
a. The process of projecting an image onto a screen or other surface for viewing.
b. An image so projected.
6. Mathematics The image of a geometric figure reproduced on a line, plane, or surface.
7. A system of intersecting lines, such as the grid of a map, on which part or all of the globe or another spherical surface is represented as a plane surface.
8. Psychology
a. The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or suppositions to others: "Even trained anthropologists have been guilty of unconscious projectionof clothing the subjects of their research in theories brought with them into the field" (Alex Shoumatoff).
b. The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or desires to someone or something as a naive or unconscious defense against anxiety or guilt.

Just projecting:
How much damage would you do to your engine revving it to 7,400 rpm for any period of time?
Just because the car CAN go 156 does NOT mean it was designed to go that speed. What are the rpms at 80 mph in FULL overdrive (with the 6 sp manual) which is what many interstates in the western US support for cop free speed?

How does sustained high rpm affect fuel consumption and engine wear?

Give me the car's rpm at 80 mph in full overdrive. I can use a good laugh.

I'm coming up with 3,077 rpm @ 80 mph. Another gear is needed, or present ratios splayed out, to pull rpms down (18% or more) to 2,500 rpm, or less.

Just about 3k..

Image

This car redlines at 6600, (7k for the '06 & 7.2k for 07-08)

Anyone actually willing to run past 7000 with this car should only do so with proper upgrades. Anything extreme would require a complete rebuild from top to bottom.

Well yeah, and technically the Z can go 198 with a disabled limiter. But nobody's going to do that.

It wears down components quicker and consumes more gas?

Why can't manual transmission drivers be trusted with the same amount of overdrive as automatic transmission drivers?
It takes a certain amount of skill and understanding to operate a manual, why not give us the overdrive capability the car was designed for?
Downshifting 18% while doing 75/80 mph for a hill or headwind is something conscious people can do.

Nissan touts "close ratio" for their 6 speed. Again, something useful only for very rapid acceleration (racing). I can understand going through the gears all out once in a while for fun, but how often is that going to happen compared to regular street driving?

You buy the Z for the experience. Yes, racing. That has been the idea since the Z car has been released. All Nissan cares about in the Z is that it goes around the track quicker.

You can't compare your grocery getting Versa with the Z. It's pointless.

I'm sorry my Versa ownership throws so many. The topic is not enough overdrive.
How about the rpm screaming manual Z on the Autobahn doing 100, 120. Where are we now?

Most germans go the speed they can pocket on the autobahn. ;)

I do not know why Nissan decided the 6 speed for the Versa. Was it to make it a more sportier version or truly did they spend time looking at the Brake Specific Fuel Consumption maps to determine what rpm range they want to run. They also have to keep in mind that shifting up too soon can cause unwanted strain and vibrations. Additionally, your 6 speed can be wonderous... because on a flat road you are in a higher gear and at the same speed going up a hill you are in a lower gear. It has appropriately two gears for a given speed. This is where fuel economy is gained, city driving. A 4-speed is not able to do this. Overdrive is only for highway speeds.

Either way optimization always comes in play. Even with the Z, for instance Nissan wants to promote a race car, but it has to optimize it for street driving. So you get something in between, for the Z it leans to the race car. It always has, since it release in 1970's. The philosophies of manual and automatics are different for Z cars as well. Nissan assumes the manual driver wants the race feel, while the automatic driving wants the more relaxed and touring feel of the car. Sometimes they can't fit everyone, but they try to fit more than others. That's the game of optimization.

I believe Nissan had the same philsophy with the Versa. But it also had to find a happy medium with city driving and highway speeds that the engine and driveline assembly is most reliable.

No medium involved, the 6 sp Versa has the same amount of overdrive as a 5 sp. I like having the extra gear. Just wish I had the same amount of overdrive as the CVT.

Give me full highway overdrive, and let the city folks stay out of high gear, unless they happen to find themselves on the interstate.

It's not the Versa ownership, it's the idea that it should be compared to the Z in any way. You might as well complain that the Versa doesn't match up to the Nissan CF80 (called the Boxcar ironically enough!) forklift in the torque department.

All of this and more...

I didn't buy my Z if for it's cargo capacity, and I wouldn't buy a Titan if I was looking for fuel economy or a Versa if my goal was speed & agility - there's a reason I've got an Xterra and a 240SX in the garage along with the Z.

And *gasp* on my to-do list is a 3.9 final drive when the new limited slip goes in, oh the humanity! :)

My position is about not enough overdrive in Nissan's manual transmission offerings. When I was getting an oil change I saw a 370Z w 6 sp on the dealer floor and wondered about the ratios.
Figured if any vehicle would have full overdrive it would be that one, wrong.
What's needed for the Z is a 7 sp manual & for everything else a wider ratio 6 sp.

Enjoy 3100 rpm at 80 mph and I'll endure 3000 rpm at 70 (I have installed the max diameter tires on my V which gets me 70 actual @ 3k)

And I have the 4.083 gears yet to be installed.

I'll enjoy my 50mph at 9000rpm in the last gear.

Now you're not content enough to compare two different cars, now you're comparing rpms of different cars at different speeds?

Every engine is tuned differently. Such as intake lengths and exhaust lengths. They have different strokes on the crank, rod lengths and bore sizes. Operating temperatures. And even the cars aerodynamics come in play.

Some cars are more efficient at a higher rpm than others.

The comparsion is pointless.

As far as your Versa goes... if you are unhappy. Sell it. Because, increasing the tire size will not help much because you are also increasing the Moment of Inertia that the engine has to over come to get them moving. This will hurt your mileage.
