I LOVE my Nissan Rogue, however about 2 months ago I had trouble starting my Rogue intermittently. The problem started when I felt a kick in the engine which felt like a very brief loss of power. I then turned the car off and when I tried to start it again, the Service Engine, VDC Off and Slip lights were all on. My car started about 10-15 minutes later without an issue, and only the Service Engine Soon light remained on. We changed the battery since the Rogue is 7 years old and the problem went away for 2 weeks. Then I couldn't start it again and we had a mechanic check the codes and the Camshaft position sensor code was reading, so that was replaced. Another week goes by and same problem, can't start it and when it finally does the Check Engine is on. The mechanic tried changing the Crankshaft position sensor to see if that would resolve the issue. It seemed to for another week. I finally took it to a dealer who said their best guess is that a short is causing the intermittent start issue (they couldn't replicate, it was starting right up each time). To repair, they think replacing the wiring harness MIGHT fix the problem. They would not guarantee that it would fix it. Has anyone ever run into this? The dealer told me it was a one in a million.. (WHY ME!?!) The repair would cost around $3,500. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I'm planning to test drive the CRV and RAV4's this weekend.

Did the mechanic use an OEM part? Often when parts fail over and over again like that it's because someone keeps putting in C.R.A.P. (Chinese replacement auto parts). As long as youre already at the dealer buy the part directly from them and have your mechanic try one more time. You just might hit a $3500 jackpot.

My daughter had a Jeep, it had what I thought was a bad crank sensor so I replaced it, NAPA brand, worked for a week. I got the genuine Mopar sensor, again worked for a short time, at that point I was at a loss. I finally found that the plug from the harness side had a loose wire, spliced in a new plug and reattached the crank sensor and all was well. Check the wiring right where the sensor attaches to the harness.

That sounds similar to my issue. Its sensor and electrical because when we disconnect the battery, it seems to reset and it starts. The Nissan dealer wasn't able to find the wire or guarantee that replacing the wiring harness will fix the problem.. So upsetting.

Take a good look at that harness plug. Up north here in salt country we have problems of that nature crop up all the time. You have a 10 , that's 7 years old so that may be your problem also.

Also check for just plain old broken or chafed wires in that area.
