Just bought a 2010 Nissan Rogue. There is a noise when I decelerate. One mechanic said that its the equilization of pressure between the fluid and the CVT transmission and that the noise was normal. I can hear the noise over the radio. Normal?

In order for us to help you we'll need some more details, we can't hear your noise so we'll need a description of what your describing. Is it a rattle, grinding, whining etc., and how loud, other details?

It's a whinning/whistling sound and occurs whether I press on the brakes or not.

If it's a low purring noise I have that too. I kinda like that though.

If I listen really carefully my CVT (presumably) makes a very subtle whine noise, but it's very quiet and does not sound out of the ordinary. I'd say it's on par with low decible background noises that you'd get with any vehicle. If your noise is fairly loud and intrusive, I would tend to say this is not normal, but it's so hard to say without hearing it.

One suggestion may be to ask your dealer to take a Rogue from their lot out for a quick 5 minute drive to compare. This is also a good strategy if you feel there is a problem but the service manger or tech does not agree and claims it's "normal". Get them to ride in your car and one off the lot back-to-back, if it is a normal noise both vehicles should sound the same. Good luck, and please let us know how this turns out!

l113892,

The high pitched whirring noise on deceleration is normal. The intensity varies based on speed, outdoor temperature, etc. The CVT does behave and sound differently than a regular transmission. It will take some time to adjust to it.

I have nearly 85,000mi (142,000km) on my Rogue. It's been making the same whirring noise on deceleration almost since new. I have not had ANY issues with my CVT so I don't think it's something to worry about.

BTW, it's totally opposite for me... I find a regular automatic transmission annoying to drive compared to my Rogue with CVT!

Thank you for the replys. It's my wife's car and she is not complaining about it once she was told it was "normal". Since I'm not in the car very often it's not something I'll necessarily get used to. It would be interesting to ride in another Rogue just to compare the volume of the sound.

Thanks again.
