Hello, I traded my 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe in last month and purchased a 2010 Nissan Rogue with 36,514 miles, the sales person never explained the CVT transmission to me, this was at a Hyundai dealership; guess, he didn't know about CVT transmissions.
When I drove home it sounded like a rear end whining noise or transmission noise. Well I did my research and found all the information about CVT's, they make a whining noise.

My problem now is going down hill, at 40mph and 2500 rpm the CVT is not breaking the engine speed and there is a lot of noise and vibration from CVT or engine. This just started last week on the same downgrade. Going to the Nissan dealer on Wednesday, I will let you know how this is resolved.

Hopefully it's something minor. But the good news is your CVT should still be under warranty for several more years. Do let us know what happens.

Be glad it's not a newer one! We looked at a 2012 a couple of years ago and they informed us that the CVT no longer had the 100,000 mile warranty. They have went back to a 3yr/36k mi warranty on them starting in 2012 I believe.

Just another reason to stay away from all CVT transmissions.

Yes luckily the 2010 has the 10yr/120,000 warranty.
Q2.
What are the new terms of the extended warranty?
A.
To provide customers with additional assurance regarding their overall cost of ownership we have doubled the warranty period for the transmission in all Model Year 2003 to 2010 Nissan models with a CVT. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles will be extended at no cost, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, to 10 years/120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

This extension is effective immediately and requires no action on the customer's part. The remainder of the powertrain warranty coverage for components other than the transmission remains unchanged, at 5 years/60,000 miles, and your basic warranty coverage also remains unchanged. All other warranty terms, limitations and conditions otherwise apply.

Also, check out the Rogue forum, rogue-forum.html we have talked about this extensively.
Good luck!

I drove a 2013 Rogue today (with 116 miles on it) and heard the same noise. Sounded like two bumblebees got trapped in there and were trying to find their way out. It was distracting as hell.

2010 Nissan Rogue CVT down hill noise:
Our Nissan dealer could not find any problems with the CVT. The problem is, there was not any down hill grades for testing in the dealers location, at least the inspection was at no charge.

My next step will be to video the the tachometer and speedometer with sound while descending a grade at 40mph.

Clarajack, have them check your CVT fluid level, could be over filled.

Also, read this thread, someone else in Colorado spoke of issues with the CVT while driving in the mountains.

I spent 3 months with a Santa Fe and loved it. I would try to trade back for a Santa Fe, quite honestly.
