I unplugged the service disconnect in the trunk of my new 2010 Nissan Altima Hybrid during a new speaker installation. After reconnecting that and the negative on the 12v battery everything lights up and accessories work but the car will not start. Pressing brake and pushing start button gets it to the ON state but when car is put in gear nothing happens.

Did you swap out the deck as well as the speakers?

Yes. Put in a new aftermarket nav/radio as well.

And since a picture is worth a thousand words here's a shot of the dash panel.

I've done dozens of car audio installs and never so much as popped a fuse so am certain this is something stupidly simple like plugging the hybrid battery in before plugging in the 12v accessory battery again -- just can't seem to diagnose this.

Sometimes when you remove the factory stereo it shuts down the whole car. It's a theft deterrent. Check the manuals for the car and the radio both to see if they have a trouble-shooting guide for that. Does the radio work? Your lights, turn signals, etc.? I was doing some research on these cars last night and seems like the batteries can drain quickly. Just brainstorming out loud, keep me posted on your progress. I'm still looking.

The security system angle is one I had not thought of. All accessories are working but car simply cannot be put in gear so makes some sense. Red flashing key icon on dash when car is off might also be an indicator in this direction. I can't recall if this was flashing before this issue arose.

Make sure you put the service plug for the main HV battery on correctly and that the leveler handle is pushed in all the way. I am not sure if that is the problem but I know that was the problem when I installed my Plug in Battery pack on my Prius. My Altima Hybrid has the same type of service disconnect plug where you have to snap the handle all the way to one side to make sure the sensor is in full contact. Hope this helps.

OK - so I broke down and finally had it towed to the dealer. The one hybrid tech in the place told me that I unplugged the service disconnect, then pressed the power button on the dash with the plug removed. Don't recall pressing the dash button with the kill switch removed but apparently I did. According to the tech this action wiped several systems back to an init state and he had to reprogram both the hybrid and brake systems to get back to the ready light. 2 hours of work with his laptop and the scanner.

No leg to stand on for me since the owners manual and the tag on the kill switch both say "don't touch". So $200 later the car is working again. Believe I won't be touching the kill switch again though it makes me nervous to do any work on the car without killing it first. Oh well. I guess I'll wear rubber gloves next time I want to replace a speaker or run a rear camera wire from back to front.
