Hello,

Last week the temperatures in NJ went into the single digits and felt negative. When I turned on the Altima, there was a loud screeching sound from the engine bay as soon as the gas engine kicked in. Must be some belt slipping or something like that. The car has 40K miles on it so just out of warranty (Dec '13). It happened twice and then I have not heard it when the temps are in the high 30's and 40's though the engine is quite rough when cold.
Anyone else experienced this? Is it worth taking it to the dealer or should I ignore it?

Thanks

Loud screeching of any sort should not be ignored. If you're not comfortable troubleshooting on your own, I'd take it to a professional. Sorry to hear your warranty just expired, that's always the way of it.

I just saw the website and it says 60/60K powertrain warranty. Would this be included in the that? Also, since the weather has warmed up, the sound is gone. Any ideas on how to reproduce it?

Since there is a possible warranty, I'd call your local service department and see what they recommend. I'm not sure if they will charge you for troubleshooting if it turns out not to be powertrain related, but rather a pulley or bearing on an accessory.

Typically if the car is considered to be under warranty, they won't charge you any type of diagnostic fee. I would say you should be fine there. I would take it in just in case, but if it's not making the noise, they likely won't be able to reproduce and they'll just hand it back to you.
