It is slower from 0-60 than the 2nd generation Prius. It has less interior room than the Prius, poorer fuel efficiency.
What does it have going for it? Aside from it being 2 grand cheaper? If I were interested in hybrids - I'll wait until the 2010 Prius goes on market.
Nissan is simply too far behind in hybrid tech to develop a dedicated hybrid on its own. The Altima's technology is actually licensed from Toyota.
The Prius and the Insight are completely different in how they use their electric motors. The Prius has a seperate Electric and gasoline motor. The Insight has an Integrated Motor Assist(IMA).
Plus they're appealing to 2 different markets. The Prius is the more well off, status concious family car. The one who likes to say, "I care about the environment when I drive to my golf game after I put in 6 hard hours behind my desk.
The Insight is more of the "hybrid for the masses" in a way. It's lower price should allow for more people to own a hybrid that gets decent returns on gas mileage.
While hybrids are all good and great, we still need something that gets us away from fossil fuels, yet still allows the freedom to go long distances without having to plug your car in to charge for 6 hours. Wether it comes from some sort of super electric car or a H2 fuel cell vehicle is up to the companies and the consumer.
