Clearshield is a 4mil or so protective clear film that is laid over the "high-risk" areas of the vehicle. If you look closely in the last couple of pics, you can see the small line across the fender and around the "GT R" badge. We essentially use the plotter, feed the vehicle information into it, feed the clearshield film into it, and select what areas we want covered from the patterns available.
Most owners want the first 12 inches of the hood covered, front bumper, front of the quarter panels, side mirrors, and A pillars. This customer spec'd to have everything that the machine had a pattern for covered. It included all the above, the complete rear bumper, the first 6 inches of the roof, under the door handles, behind all 4 wheels, the side skirts, the headlamps, and some more misc. small pieces. On this particular car, it was a full days' worth of work (8 hours) to the tune of about $1500 retail. The film, plotter, and experienced installer are all expensive for this sort of job but most find it to be well worth it.
Most cars are about $500 - $700 for the high risk areas and take 3-5 hours for installation. Here in Florida, we have love bugs so bad that if they sit on the paint for more than a few days, it will permanently etch the paint. Not to mention the flying debris and rock chips from the roads we have here. If you had to repaint the front end properly, or replace the yellowed/chipped headlamps, you would spend much more than this. So, it is well worth it for the customer who will own the vehicle for some time. Or, for the exotic car owner, truck owner with wide tires (rock spit-up), or frequent highway commuter.
It is frequently called clear bra, front end mask, clear shield, paint protection film, etc. Up north, it is most popular under the 3M brand. Down here it is LLumar or Solar Gard.
