Ok new to this board so hopefully this is the right spot.
I have an 88 200sx with a ca20e that i have been having an intermittent problem with but since the weather has gotten slightly cooler lately the issue has become more pronounced.
When i drive the car initially on a cooler day (e.g. 50's-70F) it runs fine, but after a period of time the car will all of a sudden just fall on its face when I press the gas. No power, No engine noise, almost like it dies. If you are accelerating this can be quite jarring. Also downshifts and engine breaking becomes pretty jerky.
It bogs like there is no spark and if I hold the throttle it will sometimes will "catch" itself and start running right for the period i have the throttle open.
It usually takes anywhere from 20 minutes - 1 hour of driving for this to begin.
the end result of this condition varies between subsiding in a few minutes to leaving me stranded.
Almost 100% positive this has to do with spark since whenever this happens the exhaust smells like fuel and the car will expell black puffs of smoke.
Another thing that seems to help is when I keep RPM's up during this, like if The car has to stop then i have to tap the gas until the rpms rise (3k+ it seems like but idk since the tach jumps around) and the car starts running decent then dump the clutch to get moving.
This car is my daily so all I have done is a tune up, this includes new coils, and egr delete.
This was happening before my last tune up and when i cleaned the dizzy and changed plugs and wires there was a short period where i didn't experience the issue.
I have been reading a few different things but cant seem to find anyone with this same issue.
First thing is the crank sensor in the dizzy.
This makes sense to me, the sensor in the dizzy starts getting hot and isnt reading properly.
Does anyone know a way to test the sensor in the dizzy itself or if this even could be the culprit.
Second is the MAF being bad. Never had a car running this bad with a bad MAF but who knows
third is the TPS, once again havent had a car run this bad with a bad tps.
Any and all input appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe
