My car is fast approaching 200,000 miles, and I was wondering about maintenance. I got the car at around 170k in April. It's at about 190k now. I'm asking early just in case anything is real expensive, I can save up for it.

The car was taken care of before I got it. It has new plugs and wires and new tires. I don't know about anything else. I keep the oil changed every 3k. I'm going to be putting new brake pads on it real soon.

I'm not too familiar with engine maintenance. Like, what fluids should I consider changing? Any sensors or anything??

Sorry if the question is a little open-ended... and thanks in advance for any advice

Things to consider: Timing Belt, Fuel Filter, Accessory Belts, transmission Fluid Change, Coolant according to the FSM should be changed ever 24,000 miles, check your brake fluid. Also, it might be a good idea to look over the engine bay and see if any random hoses are starting to crack or fray, and then replace as needed.

At 200k you should probably consider the following:

InjectorsTiming Chain (with new tensioners if yours are still there)fuel filterfuel pumpoil pressure regulatorfuel pressure regulatordistributor rotor and cappcv valve

**--When you do the timing chain (which is a must, don't be cheap about it) You basically have to take the top and front half of the engine off. Nissan's FSM states about an 8hr job. You should look and see how your piston rings are and piston tops. Also check the valves and spring.

Just a few things to consider. I personally love my KA, and there are certain things you have to do. If you neglect one thing, you risk breaking everything you have already fixed/modified. I hope this helps.

does it have a timing chain or a timing belt?? And the oil and fuel pressure regulators... where are they?

And about the timing chain/belt, would it better to let somebody else do it? I have a mechanic neighbor who I'm learning a lot from (i.e. he fixes my car for me while I watch). He's pretty handy, but he retired in like 1492, and doesn't know too much about imports, fuel injection, or computers.

Also, it's been making this weird ticking noise off an on since I bought it. I thought it was just when I drove the car hard that it did it, because that was the first time I noticed it. The kid I bought it from said that it had been ticking like that for a while, but two different mechanics said it was nothing to worry about. Next I thought it was when the oil was low, because it was doing it once when the oil was low, and then it stopped when I put oil in it, but it's done it when it was full of oil, and when I hadn't been driving it hard... it sounds like a card in some bicycle spokes, and it goes with the RPMs. Does anyone have any idea what this might be??

Only thing I can think of is exhaust manifold leak. How are your timing chain guides?

The KA has a timing CHAIN. Just for clarification.

I did a timing chain swap just a few months ago and it went pretty smoothly. Just make sure you have a FSM handy, which you can get here: http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/24/47/

Make sure you have ALL the tools recommended for the job. It took me a full 2 days working on it to get it finished. There's not that much involving computers or the fuel injection system (other than removing it), so your neighbor could probably help you out a lot. The only part I had trouble with is getting the timing back on. I don't have a lot of experience with ignition systems and I found it a little confusing. (still do )
