2009 Rogue - 125,000 miles

The dust cover shield on the front (that covers the brake calipers) need to be replaced. It is badly rusted and has holes.
I need to remove the Hub and Bearing to replace the shield. I also plan to replace the Hub assembly while I am at it since it has 125,000 miles.

I got a Chilton manual that says I need to disconnect the tie-rod end, and the control arm ball joint.
This doesn't make sense to me.

I think I can simply remove the brake calipers and drive axle nut, then push the CV axle back a bit, then loosen the Hub nuts and swap out the shield and Hub assembly.

Can anyone verify this? Or do I really need to disconnect the tie-rod end and Lower ball joint?

I finally found this.. and this is more like what I think I can do (not disconnect tie-rod and ball joint)

Is this the way to do it? or do I still need to remove tie-rod and ball joint?

There's no need to pull the knuckle or mess with the tie rod and ball joint. However, the hubs are often rusted onto both the shaft and the knuckle. Be prepared to use an air chisel or do some major banging and prying if either one is stuck.

No need. Calipers, axle nut, abs sensor and the bolts holding on the hub. My 09 resides in Ohio and an 8lb sledge came in very useful. Make sure you clean up where the hub mounts back with some sand paper or wire wheel. I also used a light coat of axle grease just to make the next time easier. Make sure you have the correct torque specs for the axle nut. Don’t just impact the crap out of the nut or you’ll be redoing the job before you should.

D1dad,

8 Lbs hammer for pushing the axle in? or to knock the Hub assembly loose?

Lol, depends on the rust. Yes and yes.

Well then , that makes me thinking about planning ahead more.

What about the wheel speed sensor? Do those have trouble being removed? If so, I guess I might as we get new sensors?

Rarely a problem, but take it loose before you whack anything. Impact or dropping can de-magnetize them, or crack the internal epoxy causing an open circuit.

Pretty much yes. Here in Ohio there’s not much that an 8lb can’t get loose. When it’s rotor time I don’t even mess with them. Out comes the man hammer. Just make sure you spin the axle nut on a few threads if you need to manipulate it or you’ll be doing a cv shaft as well.

I was thinking of using a pointed chisel and punch in the center of the shaft. I think there might be a dimple in there.
