Nissan Rogue 2009 Engine Whine in park/neutral - no check engine light, temperature normal. Shaking in reverse, not as bad in drive. Stalled a few blocks from home, but was able to drive it slowly into the driveway

Trying to identify the problem. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help!

Did you check the transmission fluid level?

Given the issues while in gear I would agree that maybe the CVT is acting up. Could also be low power steering fluid? It certainly sounds like some kind of pump is straining.

No power steering fluid, you have electric assist steering. The clues are shaking in reverse and whining in drive. It sounds as if one of your CVT pulleys have stuck and the CVT belt is loose and skimming the surface of the pulley. I own a 2009 and have never heard that with my transmission, but have gone into protection mode on two occasions, (95 plus degrees and going up a long upgrade on the highway). I would try a shot at a fluid change before I trade it in, as a new transmission on a 2009 is probably not worth it. I am of course assuming that you are out of warranty, as my 2009 had the 10 year and I think 110K mile extended warranty. If you are still in warranty, then don't touch a thing and have it towed to the dealer. I run Castrol CVT NS2 compatible fluid and the six or seven quarts you will drain will empty about 65 bucks out of your wallet, but if by chance it loosens up your valve body or pully piston it will get you going long enough to pawn it off on a dealer in trade.

Diagnosis was throttle position sensor. Fits the symptoms too. Hoping whine goes away after changing throttle body.

Anyone have a link to throttle programming steps for 09 rogue?

What trim level is your '09? SL, S, AWD? Do you have the transmission cooler. Just wondering

Diagnosis was faulty pressure control valve in the CVT according to Nissan dealer. What are the chances a fluid change helps this? Fluid was changed 50k kms ago, few years back. Vehicle not currently driveable, no throttle in any gear.

This kinda confirms my belief that over analyzing motor oil and filters, whether with 3000 oci or 25,000 oci does not matter.

Trust me, I've been there thinking I need the best oil and be on point when changing the oil and filter.

But in the end it won't matter because your transmission goes to s#*t anyways.

Vehicles in general are a crapshoot and cvt's are timebombs.

Personally, I think there is a conspiracy by automobile manufacturers to make sure their cars only last 100,000 miles so they could sell more cars.

I bet they hope these fail for the female population who are not mechanically inclined.

Why else are cars made with more cheapen crap.

Old cars from 60's lasted longer.

About that Volvo with a million miles?

Just sayin. :bs:
