Hi I just purchased my new 2009 Nissan Versa hatchback last week , for some reason it takes a long time to start. It doesnt do it all the time, but some times I have to hold the key and cranking about 4-6 seconds for the engine to start. I was wondering what could be the problem, it is a brand new car, only had 33 miles when I bought it.

A lot of other individuals have had problems with the fuel pump. They had the same problems --> car not starting / taking long to turn the key.My Versa is now 16 months old, with 23,000 kms and no problems. However, a lot of Versa's have had the same problem as you. I would take it back to the dealership if it continues and have it fixed under warranty.

we had a big batch of versas with this issue for the 08 model year, then it went away for a while and now its back again with 09's, i bought an 08 and have never had the issuehowever, im a nissan tech and there is a technical bulletin out in nissan world to replace the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel pump, it is letting fuel pressure bleed off to 0 psi, which shouldn't happen, the fuel system should always be pressurized so that it starts when you turn the key, thats why you dont have to pump the gas pedal on new carstake it to your dealer, they should fix it without hesitation, doesnt take long either

Do the Nissan Dealers know about this problem. I made an appointment and and Iam going to take it to them, if they dont find anything wrong with it I printed out this converstaion and Iam going to show them that I have been talking to a Nissan Tech thats knows about the problem.

Failure of the fuel pressure regulator will cause the starting problem you describe. I have had 4 fuel pressure regulators replaced under warranty in 6000 miles! The first one at about 400 miles and the others at roughly 1,000 mile intervals, the last one just a couple of weeks ago. There seem to be a bad batch of fuel regulators in the parts pipeline and the service dep't at my dealer said Nissan is aware of that. He said they will make sure I got the latest manufacture date this time. We shall see. The good news is my gas mileage improved dramatically after the first oil change at 3,750 miles. ( Is Nissan installing some kind of break-in oil?) My mileage got worse instead of better as I added miles. I mean I was averaging in the low 20's on the highway before the oil change! I just came back from a trip around Lake Okeechobe and got 32 mpg. I did not drive gently for best mileage, even passing a couple of vehicles at 80 mph. These were rural highways with stop signs, lights, etc. No complaints about mileage now! My car is an '09 SL HB and I have not had any other problems than the above. I like the comfortable seats, all the power operated goodies, AC, sound system etc. My advice to new Versa owners: wait for the first oil change before panicking about mpg. If your Versa needs to crank a long time before it starts take it to the dealer.
