Hi everyone -

Has anybody else received a recall notice on their Rogue for an ECM reprogram? We got this in the mail the other day for my wife's 2009 Nissan Rogue SL AWD (currently at 50K miles, so I don't feel like we would qualify as "high mileage"):

Emission Recall
NISSAN ID: R1408
ECM REPROGRAM
2009 NISSAN ROGUE 2.5 AWD
VIN: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
EFFECTIVE DATE: October 06, 2014
Summary
Some high mileage vehicles may experience higher than expected exhaust gas temperatures, leading to increased tailpipe emissions.
Remedy
Nissan dealers will reprogram the Engine Control Modules (ECMs) of affected vehicles.

I have a few concerns about this recall, the primary one being that Nissan will simply reprogram the ECU to reduce the power output of the engine. I feel that the engine's output is only JUST adequate enough for three people and our ski gear. I've been on drives where the car could not go faster than the speed limit of 75 mph when driving up dry mountain highways under those conditions at higher elevations (4,000 - 6,000 ft). Being overtaken by a gravel-chucking big rig with an exhausted driver on a mountain pass is not a pleasant experience.

If anyone has more information about what the ECU re-flash will do, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I felt that Nissan's explanation of the procedure was written in an intentionally vague manner because their remedy will ultimately make the car perform more poorly and of course, no one wants that.

Thanks for any info you can provide. :bigthumb:

BTT: So no one else got a recall notice? I spoke with someone at my dealership the other night and he said that it is a ECM flash but he couldn't/wouldn't tell me if it would have an effect on the car's performance. I'm hesitant to turn this car into a slower people mover than it already is.

Thanks again for any insight you can lend.

I had the recall done 4 weeks ago. My 2009 Rogue has 74,000 miles on it. Since having the recall done my car has stalled 6 times. There have been no other changes. I am going back to the dealership.

hrhjanetangela, thank you for the useful response. I took the Rogue in today to have a different recall worked on (something to do with an exposed wire harness that can get wet and create a fire hazard.) The folks at Nissan were pushing me hard to have the ECU flash recall performed and I told them absolutely not and to make a note on the work order that I did not want the ECU flash recall performed "at this time."

They agreed to that and understood my concerns. I have a buddy who is a Nissan tech and I asked him to look into it. He told me there isn't a whole lot of info out there about what exactly the flash does. That and your experience are enough to give me concerns about the whole thing. Any time these things are "emissions-related," car companies tend to default to reprogram the car to perform more poorly.

Again, thank you for sharing your experience. It's very helpful. :bigthumb:

Hi. I just found this post and can confirm that when performed, this ECM reprogram DOES lower power. Have tried to go back 3 times and complained and just got a response from the dealer saying that this is as it should be. It cannot be reversed either.

Another update. Opened a case with Nissan as a significant amount of power has been lost. They did a Air idle volume relearn, which did not change anything, did a full check of the car and decided that I had 1Qt too much CVT fliud and removed it. 48k miles; CVT fluid has never been touched. No idea how it it gained an extra QT!

BTT...

I'm not big on conspiracy theories, but this new development with the Diesel Qashqai seems awfully strange given what the Rogue's emissions recall notice covered. I wonder if we have another VW-type scam going on here with emissions-defeating software.

Nissan to be fined for 'emissions cheating' in South Korea

Jung Ha-Won
May 16, 2016

Seoul (AFP) - South Korea said Monday it will fine Nissan for allegedly manipulating emissions data on a popular diesel sports utility vehicle, bringing the Japanese car giant into a widening global scandal that has already ensnared Volkswagen and Mitsubishi.

Seoul said it would order recalls of hundreds of Qashqai model SUVs after tests revealed an emission defeat system that made the vehicle appear to be less polluting than it really was.

The decision follows an investigation into 20 diesel-powered cars that began last December after German carmaker Volkswagen admitted having installed devices aimed at cheating emissions tests in 11 million diesel engines.

"Our investigation... concluded that Nissan illegally manipulated emission data," it said in a statement.

Hong Dong-Kon, a ministry official handling transport-related regulations, added: "A group of auto industry experts we consulted with also agreed that this is a clear manipulation of emission data."

State tests showed the Qashqai switched off its emission reduction device when the car temperature reached 35 degrees Celsius to stop the vehicle from overheating, whereas other cars waited until the temperature reached 50 degrees.

The ministry also said that when the Qashqai's emissions reduction device stopped working, the level of emissions was about the same or higher than the Volkswagen cars equipped with emissions-cheating software systems.

Nissan will be given 10 days to present its opinions on the Qashqai issue before Seoul officially carries out punitive measures, the environment ministry said.
