When I have the AC switch turned to the #1 position, the AC light comes on, but there is no cold air blowing .
When I turn the knob to #2, #3 or #4 the AC light shuts off and only the fan is going. The compressor shuts off as well.
I figured it was low on freon, so I went to the parts store and grabbed a can of freon. I started charging the ac. While charging the ac if I move it past #1 the ac light shuts off and only the fan is going. The compressor is off as well. When the can was almost done the ac lights flashed while I was on #2 through #4 but ultimately they shut off.
Do I need to add more freon or is something else wrong? I am not an experienced mechanic, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Generally, a sign of low freon is your a/c works, but it just doesn't get very cold. In your case the a/c doesn't seem to be turning on properly.

Since you added a can of freon, and that did not help, I would have someone look at it. You can add too much freon, which causes pressure in the system to get too high, and it will shut the compressor off to keep it from blowing seals, etc. So I would not add more until you have it looked at.

Ok thanks.
Update now for whatever reason the setting #1 does not work. But 2,3 and 4 work. Is that an indication that AC blower fuse needs to be changed?

If the blower motor works at all, the fuse is ok. If the fuse blows, the blower motor will not work at all.

I'm not sure why the compressor is shutting off though.

Having the exact same issue. Tried adding Freon. Still no luck. But my 2,3,4 still don't work. Really interested in learning what you find out. Thanks

No problem. I am probably going to change the blower motor resistor this weekend. I've been reading other forums that the blower motor resistor is the problem. So I'll give that a try hopefully this weekend. If you find out something please post.
Thanks

I just changed the blower motor resistor. That seems to have fixed the issue. I'll drive it all week with the AC on and let you know if that was the issue. So far so good. I replaced it and #1 through #4 now work. And #1 is blowing a lot better than before I ever had any problems. If you want to replace the part. I got mine from O'Reilly's Auto Parts it was $60. So far so good. But I will let you know Friday if I have any issues.

The AC has been working all week. My advice for you would be to get the blower motor resistor.
