Here's the deal - I had this crazy idea of putting together a vert-only calendar for next year because, frankly, I don't want to look at Versa, Maxima, Z31, and Frontier pictures for half of the year. The 2008 240sx Calendar is pretty sweet, but that's about where I draw the line. I have nothing against the other cars or this year's calendar, but it's just not something I'm interested in. I also think a lot of you guys probably feel the same way.
So that's why I want to put together a vert-only calendar for 2009. I know it's kind of short notice and it's all ready October. However, we're a relatively small group here and I think we're more than capable of pulling off a decent calendar in this short period of time. If things go well for this run, we could probably get a really nice one put together for 2010 that would blow the 2008 240sx calendar away.
Due to our short timeline, we’re going to go with Café Press. I’ve had their calendars before and they’re not bad. They’re really easy to deal with and we won’t have any overhead and won’t have to liquidate any product if we have left-over calendars. They print your calendar as soon as you order it and ship it directly to you. You’ll send them your payment and they take care of all the shipping and everything. The price is going to be around $15 for each calendar. There will be more details and finalized prices and such once we are ready to print.
I have Greg's approval via Seth, and I'm sure they'll both participate. Right now, though, we need to get to work! Here’s what I need from you guys:
1. We need submissions – This is for members of our forum only. If the car belongs to someone and they aren’t a member here, it won’t be accepted. Pictures need to be as large as possible and the highest resolution possible. The bottom line is we’re not going to print crappy pictures – no matter how awesome the car might be. We prefer quality pictures over heavily modified cars.
We’ll figure out a nice democratic way to vote on who gets into the calendar once submissions have been made. I need all submissions turned in by Friday, October 31, 2008 by 11:59.59pm EST.
I will create an official thread just for submitting pictures. I’ve got some cool ideas for layouts, so I want at least 3 different pictures of each car being submitted. I’ll have guidelines for that stuff in that thread
2. I need a committee to help get this done.
a. I want three assistant editors – I want three people I can go to for input when I need to make decisions and who could help break any possible ties that might be had. I’m not openly asking for volunteers – I am going to extend an invitation to people and see if they’d like to help. Please don’t be offended if you never hear from me regarding this. Just trust that we’ll provide you with the best product we possibly can.
b. I need at least two photo-shoppers but will take more. I’m going to need people who can take the pictures, put them together, add text, and provide us with a high quality finished product. If you volunteer for this position, you will be tested and asked to present your work to the editorial team before deciding whether or not you’ll be on board. I don’t want to put a lot of pressure on these people, but they’ll be responsible for a good deal of work – there’s twelve features plus a cover that are going to need to be done.
c. I need other people willing to help. I’m sure there are going to be other things that come up as we put this together. I’ll be sure to ask for help as soon as it’s needed.
3. I need people to cooperate and be mature about this whole thing. I really hope I’m wasting my time saying this, but I don’t want to have people complaining about the way things are being done or whining because they’re car wasn’t printed or having their feelings hurt because they’re not on the committee. I’m doing this voluntarily and so will everyone else who gets involved in the project. We’ll be taking our own time to put together a cool product for you guys! We’re not in this to make money; we’re in this to support the community and give something to the great members here!
Here’s my plan for getting this done in time for everyone to have a calendar on their wall by New Years’ Day:
October: this gives us an entire month to make submissions. This should be plenty of time for our tight group. This will also be when the committee is formed and our volunteer photo-shoppers will be tested. The photo-shoppers need to be ready to go by the end of the month.
November: this is when we put everything together. I want everything selected for the general layout by the end of the first week – including what cars will be featured on what months and cover art figured out. The rest of the month (three weeks) will be given to our photo-shoppers to assemble everything to get it ready for printing. I want everything done by the end of the month.
December: I think we can get the calendars uploaded to Café Press and ready to order during the first week. I don’t know for sure, but I’d assume you’re going to want to have your calendars ordered by the end of the second week in order to get it on time. We also have some flexibility with our schedule so that it can run over into December if absolutely necessary.
I want to thank everyone ahead of time for their participation and cooperation in this endeavor. You guys(and gals) rock!
