I purchased a 2009 Nissan Rogue SL AWD and I have been hearing knocking, rattling and vibrating noises coming from the transmission at times. It happens at low speeds when pulling away from a stop and sometimes when turning corners at slowers speeds. I see that their have been lots of problems with the 2008 model CVT transmissions, but when I took my vehicle to the dealership, I was told that all the problems with the transmission were corrected for the 2009 model. Is anyone else with the 2009 model having issues with the CVT? The dealership also reported that they checked with Nissan and there have been no other problems noted. The problem is that it doesn't do it all the time, so when I took it to the dealerhsip, they reported that they test drove it and didn't hear anything.

Your problem sounds completely different than the problem a few of us have had with the 2008 CVT, I lived with the issue for months and eventually had the CVT replaced, but it wasn't very severe and was easy to replicate if you drove very slowly in a parking lot but NOT when accelerating or turning.

My question is, how do you know it is the CVT? Perhaps it is a problem related to some other component, because your description sounds quite different than the imfamous 08 CVT rattle. Hopefully it gets worse or more frequent so that the dealer can discover it and diagnose it.

Mines in the shop as I speak for a loud thump that you could feel when I would take a sharp turn in forward of reverse, at slow speeds was able to replicate it as well so we'll see what they say. Used to think it was somehting moving around in the back but, when there was nothing there it still did it. I thought of the CVT situation but, heard no rattling or such. I was thinking more along the lines of the AWD system because it coming from the rear.

I have a 2009 Rogue and I also sometimes hear a grinding noise when driving less than 10 kms. It sounds like it coming from the front driver side wheel but you can only hear it when the window is down.

After reading all the posts about the CVT problems, I'm confused to what this could be. It's going for an oil change tomorrow so i'm planning to have that looked at as well. I hope that the sound occurs when I explain it to the service manager.

Can anyone confirm the same noise on the 2009 model and if it is indeed the CVT causing the problem?

Craig what is your build date? Located on the drivers side door jamb.

While I was looking at Rogues, I test drove an 09 AWD that had a build date of July 2008. Upon approaching traffic lights or stop signs the car had a very notable vibration that didn't feel right.

On talking with the salesman he denied there was any issues with the CVT in the AWD Rogues, so he takes me to the service manager and she tells us that they had indeed replaced 3 different CVT's for buyers. He looked like the cat that ate the canary!!

I immediately walked away and that sealed the fate of the AWD for me. I'm thinking that build date is key to the problem.

Does anyone know what the factory warranty is on the CVT? No issues yet that I'm aware of, but I drove Fords for years so I may just not be noticing the "noises" LOL. You get used to noises when driving Fords

Brought the Rogue in and thank god the service manager heard the noise and spent a few hours looking into the problem. Of course he couldn't figure out the problem and said that his head mechanic was on holiday this week so I'll have to bring it in again and leave it there for a few days.

Does the regular warranty cover a loaner car for when your car is being serviced?

The powertrain warranty is 5 years or 100,000 km. This warranty does not cover a loaner car, but the service department may offer you one in kind, mine did while my CVT was being replaced, but it took them 5 minutes to diagnose the problem and decide I needed a new CVT, and it took 4 hours for them to replace the CVT so I didn't get to use the loaner for long. It was a great experience, however my transmission problem sounds quite different than yours, the noisy knocking and grinding is not something I've heard anyone else report, so possibly it's just a dud transmission and they'll likely replace it, no big deal. My new transmission has been just perfect for almost 10,000 km and I expect it to last a couple of decades.

The powertrain warranty which covers the CVT is 5-year/60,000-mile for the US market.

BTW, the odometer in my 2008 Rogue SL FWD just turned 60,000km (36,000mi) over the weekend. The CVT still makes the occasional noise but is still running strong with zero issues.

Also, on a related note, there is a guy on the Versa forum with a CVT that is just about to hit 200,000 miles, that is 321,868 kilometers!! He reports that his engine and CVT transmission are running just as good as the day he bought it, so this proves that the CVT is not designed to fail early and it can match or exceed traditional conventional transmission's. So stick that in your pipe all you CVT doubters!!

Thanks for posting the link to the thread Kerrton. There is some good information in there regarding low rpm vibration.

Hi all, I purchased a 2009 Rogue Model S FWD less than a month ago. Two weeks into using it, I noticed a slight sound “tok” more of a slight thump when I’ve initially shifted to drive and driven off from parking. Its only during that time that the sound arises. It doesn’t manifest itself during the rest of the drive, but once I’ve parked it and put on the parking brakes and shut-off the engine for a short time and then start and drive off again it will make the same sound. I thought it might be a transmission problem Brought it the other day to the dealership and I was asked to drive it along with the mechanic. I didn’t even have to leave the parking lot for the sound to be heard by the mechanic. They put it on the lift but could not find anything wrong and told me that its not the transmission. The service manager said he has placed the issue on the tech-line (something like a forum for Nissan service technicians/dealerships across Canada) if any of the dealerships has encountered a similar situation. He also mentioned it could be the parking brake disengaging but I told him the sound is there whether I engage the parking brake or not. Service manager basically told me to continue driving it awhile if it will get worse to come back. Again, its only as I pull out of the parking lot or driveway. Has anyone had a similar experience. Btw, my Rogue’s build date is May 2009.

There is an ABS/VDC self test that usually occurs within the first 100ft of driving. It varies, but is usually a metallic noise that lasts for less than a second. This could be what you are hearing, if so it's entirely normal.

You guys have gotten off topic here and are portraying inaccurate information - THIS THREAD IS FOR 2009 OWNERS ONLY.

Crypto has a 2008 Rogue, not a 2009. Please try to post in the appropriate thread, because most of us scan threads of interest, and for those who scan this "2009 CVT problem" thread will now see the phrases "my CVT had to be replaced....", but in reality these problems are mainly limited to 2008 models.

I just wanted to clarify this because it is VERY relevant, particulary for those thinking of buying a Rogue.

So this is normal then? That's good... this noise has been bugging me for sometime. Upon initially accelerating my 2009 Rogue after it's been parked for awhile, I hear a quick metallic grinding noise. Almost sounds like I've run over something.

hi
I have 2009 roque.
It is 30k miles.
When I am driving in a one way street all the windows down, where cars parked left and right side of the street I hear metallic noise, like metal scraping another.
Reason I said cars parked left and right is, when noise hits between the cars it is much easier to hear the metallic noise then if there is no cars parked. Noise changes when passing a car and hits the between the cars.
I took it to dealer, my luck I have the most stupid tech, he said my tires are winter tires that is the noise.
SO tomorrow some other tech is gonna look at it.
What are other peoples finding for the scraping metal noise?
thanxs

Dom1183, what was the problem with your roque?
