Welcome to Nico, devilson
Just guessing here....
The screen displays info selected from the radio / CD section and from the multi-switch section (that bit where the knob and A/C buttons are).
I know from experience that when you remove the multi-switch from the dash, it kills all sound, radio, aux, and all lower section controls which means the sound and radio go through that multi-switch. Since you can still control the radio and sound buttons, you can assume that the multi-switch is probably not what is causing the screen to freeze. To me, that leaves the screen itself and it's connectors. The only way to get to the screen is to remove the wood / aluminum trim on either side if the multi-switch and then remove the multi-switch itself. Then, you have to pop off the speaker screen in the dash and remove plastic trim piece that surrounds the screen. Sounds very complicated and time consuming, but it really isn't.
You might just have found out why the previous owner decided to sell / trade it. Those screens are quite expensive to replace and the car will not run properly without one.
Two options I can see:
1) buy an extended warranty if the car qualifies, and make sure it covers all electronics. Then wait a few months and have it repaired.
2) take it to the dealer and see if they can diagnose anything regarding the screen or connectors.
