The general rule of thumb is that the CVT should perform and feel like a conventional auto trans, in this situation it the shifts should be immediate and crisp. The first thing to check is the CVT fluid level, however on a new vehicle like this it should not be down.
Either way you've got a problem with the CVT, and you need to be persistent with the dealer and insist they correct the problem. Come armed with information, let them know that you know that this lag is not normal. This should all be diagnosed and fixed under warranty, no questions asked. You do not have to live with a new vehicle that is defective. Good luck.
