Hi All,

I think I'm going to be facing a battle getting this repaired. The transmission in our Altima has been making this sound for a while now. Last time my sister brought the car in they couldn't replicate it. Finally I was able to figure out to warm the car up and run it around 3k RPMs and 40 mph. After my sister brought it in to road test the car they checked the fluid level and everything checked out and the fluid was clean. We are following the Maintenance 1 on the vehicle maintenance and it states nothing about changing the fluid. rather having it inspected. We'll see what the dealer says tomorrow.

Does it start around 35-40 and get louder as you go faster?

That is correct.

Ok dealer called back. I didn't get anywhere. No codes there aren't going to do anything even though they heard it. They tried to replicate the issue and unless it is running for over an hour which my sister told them about, you can't replicate this issue.

I've contacted Nissan so we'll see what happens. The bottom line is there is a noise and wasn't making this noise when the car was new. Other people have had the same type of issue but they won't do anything unless there is an error code?

There is a bulletin detailing this problem. The differential side bearings are damaged and depending on what is found during disassembly and inspection, the trans may be repaired or need replacement.
If your dealer doesn't know about this bulletin they are idiots.

Thanks for the information. If you have the bulletin number off-hand I would appreciate it. Hopefully the local Nissan representative will have a better idea about this.

Ok thanks. I have been missing the call from the Nissan rep but hopefully will talk to them today. I'll let you know when I hear from them.

This is frustrating. I spoke to the consumer affairs lady and they ultimately go with what the dealer said. So they aren't going to do anything about it. I said the same exact thing as I did with the SA which was we have this noise and it wasn't there when the car was newer, what do we do we do to resolve this? They said nothing because of no codes and recommendations from the dealer. I have asked to escalate this issue to a manager. Will need to wait for another callback. I even mentioned the bulletin and she said the dealer hasn't diagnosed this as an issue.

I may need to take it to another dealer. I have the video with this issue as well. I don't know how much more proof I need.

Here is the video on the whine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-tgCEn ... e=youtu.be

I'm sorry. Did they acknowledge the existence of the bulletin?

She was side stepping my statement. Didn't even want to acknowledge it. I need to have someone at Nissan look at the video and go back to some other dealer with what the next steps would be.

If there is another dealer within a decent distance, I'd go there.
Couldn't be much worse.
Not sure I'd want those guys working on my car even if they now agreed to.
Sorry

Yes that is true. I have another one by my work so I'll try to get my sister's car next week and take it directly there after work.

So I got an call from a manager at Nissan. I am basically SOL unless I can get a dealer to diagnose it. I don't know why Nissan has any customer relations if they just basically say what the dealer says.

Ardmore and Drexel Hill Nissan are worthless. I think they are intentionally not doing anything because my sister mentioned that we changed the transmission fluid and they probably don't want to risk having a denied claim even though we didn't change. Even though I corrected the statement with their SA, they probably now think I am lying.

I told my sister to take it to another dealer and get it there the earlier in the day so they have someone that can look at it in the afternoon and not the next day.

I even asked if Nissan would cover this after the warranty is up since we opened an issue while it was still under warranty and she told me they make exceptions on a case by case basis.

Nissan has doomed itself with us at this point. My sister was planning on buying a Murano to replace her Altima in the next year and that is definitely not going to happen now with this situation and how Nissan is handling it.

Your CVT should have an extended warranty to 120K
They admitted they heard it, so OK, what is the cause?
Unless they can fault something besides the CVT, I can't see how they have any choice but to do the repair.
I don't understand their reluctance to do the work, however for better or worse, some techs don't want to do warranty work, or as little as possible.
They may be pressuring their service advisors to reject the job.
Have you had the car to the other dealer?

Not yet. The temperature has not gone above 90 degrees and doesn't look like it will for at least 2 weeks. My sister hasn't driven it over an hour and the only time when she does it usually is a weekend. We are going to definitely try to get it to another dealer in the next few weeks. I'll keep posting any updates.

Good luck

I had the opportunity to hear the CVT whine firsthand today, from a 4th gen Altima that was drive beside me. The whine sounds hideous and is very audible from the outside.
