Welcome to NICO!mSorry to hear that your car is having trouble.

The keyfob is probably shot. Is it your only one?

As for the slot, I'm assuming your referring to the override slot. Have you checked the fuses and relays? Here at NICO, we have Factory Service Manuals available free to members. Take a look at the link in my signature and find the FSM for your car. You'll find the details for the fuses in the electrical section.

Yes my only fob!
And I haven't tried replacing any of the fuses or check relays but I will try that next thank you!
My understanding is if the override slot works the car should start with the fob not having a battery, am I correct?

Yes i believe that is correct. As far as the battery, your keyfob may be shot. HOWever, I have heard rumors about the special type of battery that the keyfob uses suck and some are complete duds. I, myself have had to replace mine 3 times within a week and then haven't had to in 18months and counting. It's odd but thats my experience.

Its the CR2032 battery if I'm not mistaken. The battery itself doesn't suck, but a lot of people buy ten packs off Amazon in which 4 or so will be useless from the get go. This is due to time, as usually amazon is shipping out old stock, hence the low price. I bought a 4 pack from the local Sam's club, put one in each of my fobs 2 years ago, and still have 2 left which will probably be duds by the time I need them. The difference is these are lithium cells, not alkaline. Alkaline (as advertised very proudly on the packaging) can sit for up to 10 years without degradation, while lithium will slowly lose its charge. Case in point: every fully charged your backup cell phone then turned it off for use later, only to find the charge has diminished or been lost altogether? lithium ion technology. They are rechargable and hold a remarkable amount of energy for their size, but have some drawbacks like temperature sensitivity and the aforementioned loss of charge over time
