I did some quick research, and although most of this came from blogs and message boards, it seems valid. Supposedly Sirius allocates more bandwidth to their music stations than their talk stations, providing slightly better music sound quality than XM. This is based on the supposition that XM does not do any such allocation and simply distributes the bandwidth evenly across all stations, music, talk, sports, etc.
Apparently XM's average bitrate is 64 kbps. The low is 32 kbps and the maximum is 80 kbps. A commenter on a message board said that Sirius uses an audio codec from Lucent called PAC that broadcasts at 64 kbps.
To me, that sucks. I guess I verge on being an 'audiophile', as I'm extremely sensitive to sound quality, but I think most folks can hear the difference between a 128 kbps MP3 from a lossy codec versus the original recording.
To me, the sound quality of XM is tinny, shimmery, watery, flat, dull, you name it. Different songs are more prone to this compression effect though, depending upon instrumentation and the timbre of those instruments. Plus, some songs/albums are purposely recorded in a less pristine manner than others. Think Badly Drawn Boy's debut, if anyone listens to that.

Wow, I totally missed this two months ago. You're welcome.
