I just bought a '08 Versa SL and I freakin' love this little car. I traded in my Xterra because of the gas mileage and wasn't sure how I was going to enjoy a car. Anyways, I got the with every option except for the sunroof, xm radio, and Rockford Fosgate sub. Anybody have any pictures on what the sub looks like in the car? I'm wanting a little extra oomph in my stereo system but am out of my 1000 watt bass days. I am just trying to see what the factory installed option looks like. Any does anyone know how many watts it is?

Here's a pic of the factory sub in our Versa...

It's pretty decent, although with XM it isn't especially potent - satellite radio has disappointing sound quality if you ask me. Perhaps worse than typical FM in that it is far more compressed, it sounds like 98 kbps MP3s. With a CD, however, it's a nice addition to the system.

I'm not privy to the wattage on this thing, though. The Nissan website doesn't specify.

Hey Rockhound, after looking at your pic I started wondering something: does your car have a different cargo floor mat than the non-subwoofer hatch, or does the mat go under the woofer enclosure? Just curious.

There is a different mat depending if you have the OEM sub or not.

Could just go ask the dealer. Usually they won't split up accessory packages like that though. And it would still be expensive.

That was my ultimate goal as well. I wanted to see if I could get the factory sub because of the clean look of it. I used to have XM myself and hated. They play the same music on the same channels over and over again. I went to Sirius for awhile and loved it but cancelled to save money. I do agree with the low sound quality...you can especially hear it during talk radio.

Pretty much, I'm just looking for a small all in one enclosure with amp and sub. I was thinking of a bazooka tube but wanted to keep my options open.

When I do a stereo upgrade I am going to try to get a sub that would fit into that side panel. Does anyone know how to go about ordering that piece or what to expect to pay?

<slight threadjack>Rockhound, is the compression on Sirius different? I listened to a song on Sirius, then the same song directly after from the CD and noticed little difference... I've been meaning to ask you about this...

I did some quick research, and although most of this came from blogs and message boards, it seems valid. Supposedly Sirius allocates more bandwidth to their music stations than their talk stations, providing slightly better music sound quality than XM. This is based on the supposition that XM does not do any such allocation and simply distributes the bandwidth evenly across all stations, music, talk, sports, etc.

Apparently XM's average bitrate is 64 kbps. The low is 32 kbps and the maximum is 80 kbps. A commenter on a message board said that Sirius uses an audio codec from Lucent called PAC that broadcasts at 64 kbps.

To me, that sucks. I guess I verge on being an 'audiophile', as I'm extremely sensitive to sound quality, but I think most folks can hear the difference between a 128 kbps MP3 from a lossy codec versus the original recording.

To me, the sound quality of XM is tinny, shimmery, watery, flat, dull, you name it. Different songs are more prone to this compression effect though, depending upon instrumentation and the timbre of those instruments. Plus, some songs/albums are purposely recorded in a less pristine manner than others. Think Badly Drawn Boy's debut, if anyone listens to that.

Wow, that's some good info. Thanks for posting the link. The only reason that I like XM is the diversity of programing - it is nice in the instance where I've worn out the CDs I have on hand in the car and just want to hear something different. The quality is a huge detractor, however, so I won't be renewing subscriptions on either car.

On the Versa, I activated the free 3-month trial shortly after we drove it off the lot. The ever-so-friendly call center dude asked me what kind of rate plan I'd like to go with after the free trial was over. I said that I'd go with the longest plan possible (smallest monthly payments) - because I was still in the honeymoon period with XM. I specifically asked if it would lock me in, and he said no, he just wanted me to have an idea of the offers they had.

Great. 3 months later, a $350 charge appeared on my credit card for 3-years subscription to XM. I called them up and asked them why they hadn't notified me first, since in their words, I wasn't locked in by doing the 3-month trial. They had no answer. They transfered me to a 'save' who then offered me the next 3 months for $15 total. I figured what the heck. But then when that was over, I got billed again, without notice for another 3-month period at normal price. I forgot to call and ***** about that one, so it slipped by. When this 3-month period is over, however, it's over. The least they could do is write/call/email me and ask if I'd like to continue my subscription - but no, I guess they have to resort to crap like this to keep customers.

i was goin to get the rockford set up in mine but it just wasnt the bass i was looking for i ended up putting two kicker comps in the back of mine with a pretty good amp to go with it and i got LOC behind the dash hooked up to the Stock Headunit that nissan gives you... Ipod touch has a little bit of a Diff sound to it.. and the CD`s and radio all sound better with the LOC in it... but to me buyin the rockford set up from nissan is a waste of money... but with after market head units... if you dont have the controls to put your high mids and lows where you want the radio will sound like crap i alwas got bass over music but with CD`s it trashed the car... but LOC`s are the way to go if you dont want to spend hundreds of bucks on a CD player for your car... im goin to try and get a video of my subs trashing my V... most parts in that car move XD
