Hello
I'd like to get some advice regarding my 2008 Rogue. We were recently coming back for a camping trip, Rogue was loaded down with 4 people + dog + gear and temp was about 90 deg for a 3 hr drive. As I got off the freeway, the transmission felt like it was slipping, and would not engage....totally lost power and i coasted to the shoulder. After a minute, I was able to get it going again.

I took it to the dealer, and told them what happened. They said my transmission overheated and they recommended a cooling device for around $3200  If I were to sell it right now I could maybe get $3000 for it...I still owe $3400 on it :-( So imo it's not worth the money. Unfortunately I am out of the warranty by 7 months.

I'm trying to decide if I should trade it in before the trans totally breaks down on me.

Trans flush at my local dealership is around $450 (seems really high) Service dept thinks as long as I don't take it on any long, grueling road trips it'll be fine. It hasn't given me any problems since....so maybe I'll be fine.

Has anyone had a similar experience? What would you do if this was your Rogue?
Thanks for any input!

There is an extended warranty on the 1st generation Rogue up to 120k miles I believe. So you could tell the dealer to forget about the $3200 cooler and replace the transmission under the extended warranty.

I just double checked and it appears there is an 8yr time limit on that warranty also, but it can’t hurt to ask.

There is a thread around here about installing an aftermarket CVT cooler yourself.

I'd first do a D&F on that craptrans that Nissan loves. My local dealer was asking $209 + tax, whereas the dealer I got the Rogue from was asking $139 + tax. Do some search on the prices, or just grab 5-6 quarts, a drain pan, a 19mm socket and your trans dipstick and DIY it. But before doing the change, check your CVT fluid color, since the 2nd Gen Rogues doesn't have a dipstick :D :D

RogueJarhead, OP might be out of that warranty too, depending on which month he bought his Rogue.

Get 5 qts of cvt NS-2 fluid on ebay for around $70-80.

Easier than a regular oil change.

Cured my slippage. Running smooth ever since.

Transmission coolers are so affordable.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, unfortunately I am out of the warranty by 7 months. I did plead my case to the Nissan customer service and they offered to split the $3200...better than nothing I guess, but still not sure I will go for it. Thanks for the ebay links...I'll weigh that option as well.

Split the $3000 labor?

Isn't a new cvt like around $4000?

I paid $4k for my new transmission. Unless the cooler is going to provide... other.... services, that's way too much, and it does nothing to reverse prior damage.

Try sucking cvt fluid out the dipstick with a pump can. I've done this several times when mine overheated in men climbs. 270k on my 2008.
