Hi all!

I purchased a 2008 qx56 a few months ago. Recently, I've noticed that a mechanical sounding noise "kicks on" intermittently and it sounds like it is coming from the rear drivers side, near the wheel. Sounds like it is coming from right above the wheel well.

It'll kick on for a little while and then stop. It occurs at random times like when first starting the vehicle, stopping at a red light, idling, parking and putting the car in park. There doesn't seem to be any pattern except that it kicks on for about 15-30 seconds, and then kick off.

Anyone have similar experiences? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

thats your auto levelling pump. the rear end has airbags.

The rear shocks are air shocks. There is a air compressor under the left rear of the Armada. A sensor located near the compressor detects the ride height of the rear and inflates/deflates the shocks as necessary.
The system works well.

Thanks Marc! You're amazing! Thanks so much! Now I'm not as worried or embarrassed when it kicks on. Is it. Supposed to kick on frequently? I don't tow anything and don't have a heavy load. I bought it in November so it has been somewhat cold. But I hear it kick on everyday. Is that something to get worry about?

Thanks again!

cold weather makes it kick on more frequently than in warmer weather.

its kinda of like how your air pressure in your tire's fluctuates when its colder out. water in the air condenses when its cold and that lowers the pressure.

for now, just assume its due to the cold weather, especially if it sits outside in the cold weather.

during a warm spell, check to see if it changes in frequency. if it kicks on less, then it may be a safe bet thats its normal. if it does the same when in warmer weather, you could have a leaky air bag, or both could be leaky. could also be the hoses could be in need of replaced.

there is a control rod in the back under there that can be adjusted. since this is a used car, the prior owner could have messed with it. hard to tell over the internet, but these are things to look out for.
