35xHi,

I am a new owner of a 2008 G35x. The oil change light just came on at 3750 miles, so I was just checking to see what weveryone here reccomended for oil and filter brand? In my other cars I have changed it between 3000-5000 depending on if I was using synthetic or not, and with this car the salesman had actually told me the interval was at 7500 which I guess is partly true depending on your driving habits. Lastly is there any sort of included maintenance contract, for schedueld maintenance or is it all out of pocket?

Thanks,Mike

Welcome to the club!

I don't think the oil light came on because you need an oil change. I was under the impression that it came on when there wasn't adequate oil pressure. I could be wrong...

Before you go driving any further, I'd check the oil level in your engine. The oil consumption issue was only supposed to cover the Rev up engines IIRC, but it's possible that you have a faulty engine too.

Thanks!

Actually this is the oil and filter maintenace light. Checked oil when it first came on, it's just a maintenance reminder. Any suggestions on brand of oil and filter?

IMO Royal Purple Full Synethic @ 3,000 mile intervals. Oil filter Carquest Gold or K&N. Just a couple filters...

Glad I don't have one of those. I'd disconnect it lol.

Depends on how much you're willing to pay and what your stance is on Synthetics.

Here's a quick list:

Mobil Clean5000/7500- Used it in my I30, seemed to work pretty good. Better than el-cheapo, but not the best.

Mobil 1 Synthetic- Used to be one of the top 3, now they degraded their formula so it's not a true synthetic. When I put this in my I30, the oil always got dirty FAST. This could be because the engine was old and the synthetic oil was cleaning it.

Overall still a good oil, should last longer than conventional. "Extended" version available. Also available in new "Fuel economy formula".

Make sure to buy this in the 5qt jug or at Costco for significant savings.

Amsoil- Very highly regarded synthetic who's goal is efficiency and the least amount of wear. I haven't personally used it because it's expensive as all hell, but what I've read makes it my next choice when money is available.

They offer super extended change intervals up to 30k miles. Lab tests show extremely low wear with their products. Expect to pay around $60-$70/oil change.

As for filters. I use one of Fram's upgrade filters, but some advise against using them all together. Getting the OEM filter is always a good idea.

K&N bothers me...They are super high priced and they single pass efficiency is 90%. They never mention the multipass efficiency.

Fram Extended Guard is like 99% multi-pass.

Royal Purple is also a great contender, just not for extended change intervals.

I always heard that for your first few oil changes you're not supposed to use synthetic so the engine can break in properly.

I would change your oil the first time with regular old Dyno oil. THen I'd change again around 7500 miles to synthetic. I've been using Mobile 1.

For full synthetics most people have been using Mobile1, Royal Purple, and Amsoil.

There is serious debate on this. Some say that synthetic is too slick to properly seat piston rings, others actually use synthetic right off the bat.

Amsoil states that there is nothing wrong with breaking in your engine with their synthetic and I think a few manufacturers actually build the cars and send them off with synthetic in them.
