I'm confused, my 2006 Infiniti M35 had a dvd based navigation system. I purchased a 2009 dvd mapping
update from Navteq. they sent it to my, I installed it and the navigation display appearance was greatly
improved. It seems, according to navteq, that I now have to buy an update which Infiniti then installs.
Am I missing something, or is that their latest steel your money ploy. Why have the dvd module in the center
console if someone besides me uses it to update mapping?
Any help or words of wisdom would be appreciated,

my understanding is the the dvd is all you need for the 2006
the 2008 has a hard drive based system that you need to log on to navteq internet site get a code or key and then have a infniti dealer do his magic for an additional charge

You nailed it Keith, the 08+ M's must have the NAV info updated at the dealership...there's no way around it.

yep, so even though you have a previous update disc from you 2006 M it is no use to you on your 2008 M bc the 08+ are HD based. Also im assuming the dvd player in the center consol is not for the navigation but rather for playing dvds on the display screen when car is in park with parking break on (unless you are nav. hacked like a lot of us are). My 06 M45 has the navigation cd drive in the glovebox and then the dvd player drive in the center consol. They may have done things a little diff. in the 08+ models.

Also the newest update for our cars usually comes out around October so if you are planning on updating I would wait a little bit for the newest one so that you dont spend big bucks just to be outdated a month later. Dont expect much of a difference though after the update. It just updates maps, addresses, POIs etc but not a major navigation overhaul, you might not even notice the update at all.

I have a 2008 M45X with both the rear entertainment system and the navigation. The DVD player in the centre console is just for playing DVDs on the rear screen, it has nothing to do with the nav system. If you are in park, you can also see the DVD on the front navigation screen. The nav system starting with MY 2008 is HDD based. You purchase an update code from NavTeq online and then pay again to the dealer to have them download the update into your hard drive using the code. Unfortunately, no way around it. Nice way to generate a little extra cash to the dealer. IMHO, you should just be able to take it into the dealer, they could then download the code and do the install, all in one step. They talk about "The Infiniti Experience", but here is another example of making the service and convenience to the customer more complex and costly than it should or needs to be. My response is to just update less often. If the price were more reasonable and the process simpler, I might consider doing it annually. Their loss!

you were all so kind to reply, I just bought the 10-11 Navteq map update code to take to the dealer. They had
the nerve to charge me California sales tax of $12. 29 for the 8 digit activation code. I am curious as to just how
big this expensive file is and why they would decide to put it on a hard drive, besides the obvious, another dealer
labor charge. Anyone know what dealerships usually charge to install this?

The old versions barely fit on a double layer DvD, so its easier to manage on a hard drive since they can add more data in and fancier graphics. The cost is just cause they can. Navteq could sell each copy for $20 each and still make a fortune. I very much doubt the company puts more than a couple thousand Dollars into a map update. They dont even do any research or work themselves, the company relies solely on the users to inform them of what needs updating for new streets and where the streets are. Software is the easiest way to make money in the world since once you write the base you barely do any work and to sell it to someone doesn't require anything from you.

I think the dealerships charge just for the labor, but they charge for like 2 hours of it. So apparently it must be complicated to get at the hard drive. Copying the data should only take 6-7 minutes of time.

When I owned my early 2000 Passats, the vag tool ( which was used to read the car computer functions )which accessed fault codes for the car was readily accessible in less than 20 seconds.
I am only doing the map update because I"m compulsive about too many things, like replacing a brand
new generic gray carpet set simply because it didn't have the infiniti monogram logo which the dealer is going
to give to me because I bought a 2008 EX35 on a saturday and 8 days later I bought a 2008 M35. I absolutely love
this car, especially in the blue slate color and graphite interior. I just purchased a half hid show on page below.
scroll down 3/4 of the page to the Carbon color hide to place on my back seat for protection when I place groceries and other odd items on the back seat. From a casual glance it won't look to unlike factor leather.

They aren't even good at that. I provided an update in 2009 to an address that is off by 7 miles. It is an address from a company and I provided it using my company e-mail address. The report is still open and untouched. On the other hand, Google corrected their maps to get this address right. I'm not sure I even reported it to Google! There are two Android's at the company paid for by the company, so maybe they figured it out by spying on the phones. I probably did report it to them too, I just don't remember doing it. They go overkill, though, I showed my friend how to report a road that didn't exist anymore a couple blocks from his house, and he included a satellite image from their maps system that showed flood water in a cornfield. When they removed that road, they added a lake where the cornfield is.
