I have a 2008 M35S which has been flawless so far. I did have a problem yesterday which is probably a product of my own stupidity. I noticed smoke coming out from under the engine compartment and a strong oil smell in the cabin. I couldn't see anything obvious and I all I can think is that I checked the oil the day before and the I think I may not have seated the ridiculous crooked dipstick back in correctly and had oil blow out through the dipstick hole. Also, there was some oil leakage on the driveway overnight but it seems to have quit. I would assume this means that it only leaks under pressure when the engine is running.

Just looking for some confirmation that others may have experienced this and is the likely problem before taking it to the dealer (still under powertrain warranty).

My first post though I have lurked for a good while. Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

I have seen this many times. It is actually fairly easy to do..I'm guilty of it.

You are completely correct, under load oil sprays out of the hole. It looks bad, smells worse and can make an epic mess.

Usually it is a fairly easy fix and the oil loss is not as bad as it looks. You can spray cleaner on it or ignore it and wait for it to burn off.

I did the same the very first time I checked the oil. I put it back in adjacent to the hole. There was oil all over after about 100 miles on the hiway. I had purchased the machine secondhand and I thought the worst. I took it in and they changed the oil and told me the dipstick was not inserted correctly. Talk about one feeling really, really foolish (maybe folks were right about me...). I have since always used a flashlight when doing oil stuff.

The oil spout location is really my only complaint so far (besides the OEM Goodyear RSA's) about the '06 M's. Love this machine otherwise!!
