From what I see this calculator is actual pretty close. I checked it against various tire manufacturers recommendations and basically it comes in within 1/4 to 1/2 inch and typically within 1/4 inch of their recommendations. So I would say it is safe to say that if you take in a 1/2 inch maximum difference in recommendations and stay towards the center of the calculator range of rim sizes you should be well within the recommended range regardless of tire brand.

In the case of my other car besides taking the recommended rim width into consideration Discount Tires also took a similar rim and a similar tire off the shelf and did a test install for clearance purposes front and back before ordering the wheels and tires I wanted (at the time TSW and Dunlop 9000s). Those tires gave me a little over 40k while their replacements (Toyos) have given me a little over 40k but still have what appears to be another 10-15k left.

I think the Dunlops may well have gone the same distance because there was a suspension issue that presented itself in conditions of moderate to hard braking. This also taught me a lesson of not assuming what feels like a warped rotor is a warped rotor.
