Hey guys this is my first post here and I have a bit of a problem. My tachometer on my gauges seems to have an intermittent light bulb or something. Right around the 6-7k Revolution mark on the tach, the light will come on and off but for the most part it's off. The rest of my gauge cluster works just fine and is always lit up and there are no other problems except for that. Does anyone know if this is an easy fix or will I have to take it in? And if I have to take it in, is it something that will it be costly to fix?

Any help would be great :)

Welcome to NICO!!

If you're under warranty, I'd take it in! Haven't heard that one before...

Here's a photo of what I am talking about. You can tell that right at the 6-7k mark the light is out. Anyone know of anything ?

That is weird...looks like a LED just died in that one spot. Probably not much you can do other than tear out the cluster. Check out the FSM (link in my sig) for some directions on how to do that.

Good luck!

I'm on my second G and have never had either engine rev up that high. :chuckle:

I would have to assume it is a LED on a circuit board and if it requires dashboard removal it is probably not worth the cost

I'm at 80 MPH at 3k RPM

Stay below 6k RPM and check rear view mirror frequently.

Yeah the light is intermittent though, I wish it would just either stay off or on lol .. Even when I'm idle it will occasionally flash off or on.. I noticed that it happens less frequently if I am in the daytime and my brightness setting is second to highest and at nighttime I can turn the brightness wayy down and it will happen less often also.

Any luck getting this fixed? I have the exact same problem on the exact same car (2008 G35S Sedan) except its at the 4k rpm spot. Unfortunately it happened right after the warranty expired.

I was thinking of having it addressed when I bring my car in for its 60k mile service but I was wondering if anyone had any idea how expensive replacing that LED will be (plus it sounds like I should just get them all replaced before another LED dies on me)?

I'm considering selling/trading-in the car sometime soon and I know that this gauge issue is going to come up. Any help or DIY advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Nice. Mine redlines at 8,200 RPM and I've bounced it off the limiter a couple times :ohno:

Unfortunately there is probably no external fix. The cluster will need to be taken out and apart to replace the bad lights I'm afraid.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner - I'm just not driving my G35 as often (damn high California gas prices!) so it was a few additional months until I had to bring it in for service.

A week or so ago I brought it in for a simple oil change at the dealership and my "service rep" didn't seem the most competent unfortunately. He told me "well, its a $5 part that will cost big bucks to replace, and everything may never go back together right again" (side note - Are you f'ing kidding me!? You`re the god-damn dealer! You gotta be able to put the dash back together right!). So, I had him clarify what "big bucks" meant and he said "$150-200" which does not sound like a lot considering they have to take the whole dash apart. I informed him that thats not too much (though of course its not a formal quote) and that if I had them do the work I wanted every single LED replaced, not just the oneso I could be confident this would not happen again in the next year or so (seemed dumb that he didn't recommend that himself).
In the end I opted not to have the work done since its not hurting the car, though if/when I decide to sell I will probably just bite the bullet on it and pay the $200 to make sure I get top dollar in the sale.

If anyone comes up with any advice about a better place to take my car to get the LED replaced (such as a Nissan dealership or car stereo installation place, etc) just let me know!

I have the same problem...light out on tachometer between 3 and 4k. Just came from the Infiniti dealer and you must buy the entire gauge cluster. The cost quoted was $595. plus labor. I'm going to live with the problem until it gets worse.

I have the same issue on my 2008 G35x. Mine actually is off at all times.

I was going to attempt a fix myself, under the impression that the instrument panel could be removed without taking apart the entire dash. My thoughts on the procedure would be to remove plastic clam shell and controls from steering stem and unfasten the plastic around the cluster and slip it back and over steering stem.

Has anyone actually done this to confirm?

First post on this forum.
The back lighting on my fuel gauge has died! Do any of you know for sure the cluster is lit by LED's or just assuming. To take the cluster out just to find out what part is needed would be very frustrating. I have had the cluster partially out before, I didn't take the streering wheel off and it has to be removed to allow enough room between the windscreen and wheel, that requires disconnecting the battery and airbag assembly, which in turn loses all settings and we all know how long it takes to set up the controls to just how you like it!!!
I have tried, with no luck, to find a parts diagram for the dash and cluster to show lighting, any of you know of such a diagram?
Greg.

I have a 2007 G35x with 67K miles and for the past week or so, the back light on my tachometer between 6-7K was intermittently going on and off then would remain on after driving for awhile and as of last night, it went completely out after flickering for a bit. The rest of my dash back lights are working property with the exception of this area. I would presume that since a few of us has the same issue and actually said something about it, many other owners out there have the same issue but just let it be. -Neither these cars are cheap nor are their replacement parts. I would presume the manufacturer would stand behind their product and fix this non isolated issue that many of us have encountered.

...like the miles your mom has been ridden...my whip indeed has less miles on her...i presume you were conceived when she hit 100K+/- miles cause you seem like a clunker knucklehead.

Telcoman - Yes have studied the service manual, it doesn't tell me what part is required. If they are not LED's I'll do what is possible to convert it to LED!!!

I need information about removing the steering wheel without risk of setting the airbag off. It's not just a matter of disconnecting the battery, a clip of some description is need to insert into the airbag nodule. Anyone have information on this, could not find this info in the service manuals. BTW my machine is a right hand drive.

eMJay_GeeZee - If you can't stick to the subject on discussion, best you refrain from posting.

My 2009 G37 Journey started having that problem earlier this year. It usually happens to my temp gage light but occasionally happens to my Tach also. Thanks for the advice to live with it. I wonder if it's possible to snake a wire pair soldered to a 12vdc LED bulb behind the instrument cluster without removing the cluster to illuminate that area?

My 2009 G37 is doing what Benhir's is, but it's my gas gauge that drops out. Dealer says $800 to replace the circuit board in the dash.
