2008 EX35 Journey AWD w/shudder in reverse

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hello everyone:

I am new on this site and also a new owner of a 2008 EX35 Journey AWD - Auto - w/109K miles. I will get right to the point of of the problem with my EX35 that I'm facing with....

My EX35 shudder when in reverse gear under low acceleration. It doesn't grind and it doesn't shudder while going into the reverse gear, only shudder while in reverse and actually backing up slowly. I can feel the shudder coming from the rear of the car.

I recently had the front and rear differential fluid replaced along with the transfer case fluid as well as the transmission fluid. It probably had less than 50 miles on the new fluids. The tires are brand new. The brakes are fairly new and all of the suspension components are intact. Nothing hanging low or could be dragging from the bottom of the car. This symptom just appeared about a week now.

The fluid that I used in the Differentials are Mobil1 LS 75W90 full synthetic. As for the transfer case, I used RedLine D4 automatic transmission fluid. For the transmission, it was done at the dealership and they used J-matic or some sort and they used 16 quarts for the job.

There is no slipping or grinding noise in the forward or reverse gear, but that little shudder appear while backing up slowly. The shudder doesn't always there when in reverse, perhaps, 4 out of 5 times. It does it with cold & warm operating temperature.

I read somewhere that you have to drive for at least 100+ miles before you can see the different after changing out the fluid. The EX35 had a very clean and up-to-date services from the dealership. The last major service was done at 60K miles and now it has 109K miles.

Anyone had similar issue with your Infiniti??

Thank you for reading this.

That does seem kinda odd.

Just wondering, how long have you had the car before the maintenance? What method did they use to change the ATF?

My feeling is that it might be related to the transmission. If you want to rule out the brakes, you can probably put the car on a lift or stands, put it in reverse at idle and see if the wheels are getting hung up. If it definitely isn't the brakes, I would guess that it had something to do with the ATF change. I also wouldn't rule out an impending part failure in the transmission, as the car does have a bit of age to it; but I don't think that's something I'd be able to diagnose on my own.

If you do get to the source of the issue please let us know what it was.
