2008 EX35 5speed AT - Fluid change question.

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Just a quick question to those DIY guys here who replaced their 5 Speed AT fluid.

I like to know if you had to fill the transmission fluid (Matic J or Matic S ? )
to where the dipstick hole is? How long does it take to empty a quart with that small of a hole?

Do i just remove the 19mm plug under the transmission pan? Then measure how much oil came out and replace the same amount via the dip stick?

I heard the typical amount that goes out via the flush and fill method are 3-4 quarts only. By doing this method 3 times ( 3 engine oil change intervals of 5k miles) does the old oil from the torque converter being remove to?

And also do we now use Matic S for the 2008 5speed AT?

Thank in advance!

1. I used the dipstick hole to refill the fluid. Make sure you have a funnel with a bottom that is narrow enough to fit. With the narrow opening, it does drain from the funnel a bit slowly, but it doesn't take too long.

2. Yes, I removed the plug on the pan, measured what drained out, and refilled that amount through the dipstick. In my first ATF change, I dropped the rear of the car a bit lower than the front while on the jack stands, and got about 3.75 quarts out. The second time I did it, I left the car level and got maybe 3.25 quarts. Also note that these fluids expand when hot. I did not run the car prior to draining the ATF; so the old fluid in the AT was the same temperature as the new bottled fluids in my garage.

3. Yes, the old ATF from the torque converter would have mixed in with the rest of the fluid in the system. It happens in much less than 5k miles (I'd guess sometime within the first mile). I don't recall off hand the amount of old fluid left over after 3 fluid changes (maybe 20-30%?), but there are calculators out there that can figure it out for you.

4. The 2008 FSM recommends Matic S, but allows Matic J as a substitute.

Very much appreciated for the reponse NJguy!

I called Nissan Parts Dept. this morning and I was surprised that the Matic S , which is our recommended AT fluid is cheaper ($10.99 per quart) than the Matic J (older fluid) at $12.99.

I am at 73K miles now and I am the 1st owner. I am keeping the Ex35 for another 2 years (My extended warrany ends on Sept 2016/96k miles)

I am trying to wait what minor stuff breaks (bumper to bumper coverage) before I go to pay $50 deductible warranty work on the car.

Here are my issues so far.

1) Passenger side hood latch cable gets sticky and won't be able to latch into the hood when it is cold. I had to pry the cable head that connects to the latching mechanism out then close the hood in orde to work.

2) Driver side door freeze and unable to open up when it is cold.

3) Cup holder bottom floor mechanism is broken.

4) All of my tire stem treads are worn out due to stock aluminum cap got rusted and could not be removed. Infiniti does not cover these as warranty work unless the TPMs is causing an issue. It was their fault to put a metal cap in there!

So far car runs like a champ!
