2007 Xterra transmission cable failure

With less then 100,000 miles on the car the transmission cable has fallen off the connecting stud, thus putting the transmission into PARK permanently.

Luckily it did not happen while driving.
Apparently there WAS a plastic insert in the eye attached to the shift stud.
No more, it just disintegrated!

Could somebody answer the following:
1. Is less then 100,000 miles on engine NORMAL lifespan of this part, on Nissan, or any other brand?

2. Anybody care to speculate what would happen if this part FAILED while driving at ANY speed?

YES, things do not last forever, so keep any other comments on THAT subject to yourself.
