My Versa didn't come with a temperature gauge. So, I put in a ScanGaugeII and now can monitor the temperature (hate those lights!). Anyway, I notice that the Versa runs about 184 to 188 (with the A/C running). It reaches 190 before it starts back down. Is that a normal temperature?

FWIW - We've filled up three times (city and hwy) averaging 32MPG (we are happy).

Now, if we could just get Nissan to install a Cruise Control!

First you should post up where you got the ScanGaugeII, I'm sure some people are interested.

For the most part 180-200 is normal engine operating temp for cars I've seen. On the 240s the stock fan doesn't even cut on til 212 degs or so. So you are fine.

I also have a SCAN GAUGE from scangauge.com. At highway speeds on level surface it shows 182-186 degrees. On a warm day at 0-10 mph in heavy traffic with A/C off, it cycles between 206-194 degrees. I have versa SL.

Super! My 2004 Frontier stays about 182 or so. Thanks for your numbers - it makes me feel a lot better.

Thanks for the information.

You can find the ScanGaugeII on http://www.scangauge.com/

How do you hook it up?

Edit: i cant read....

The cable is detachable at the ScanGauge II and can be connected on the back or side of the unit. Once connected to your vehicles OBDII port, the ScanGaugeII automatically negotiates communications with your cars computer - It's that easy!

I think im going to buy one...

I bought mine with an extra cable (for my Frontier). I hooked it up to the Computers and ran the cables to the steering columns (on both cars).

It is kind of neat because it actually affects the way you drive. I watch the MPGs and you can really see the difference between your RPMs and your MPGs.

Now I know I definitely need one. My wife has driven the car for the last 5 days while I was on a business trip and came back to see I have less than half a tank with only 177 miles on it. Maybe this would help her see what mileage we should be getting.

Just noticed, looks like a group buy could be set up with them, have to email them. But other group buys I've seen could get them for $149.95 shipped with 10 orders.

In case anyone wanted to try to set that up, I would think you could get 10 people.

For reference, I had 2 motorcycles with coolant temperature gauges. Both displayed "--" when under 100F. The thermostat started to open between 150-170F. They both normally ran around 175-185 when crusing. When I stopped, they would quickly climb over 200. The fan kicked on at 210-220. On the fuel injected bike, it went in to 'Limp mode" and richened the mixture and retarded the timing at 250. I think the coolant will start boiling shortly after 250.

My current motorcycle is air/oil cooled so it's a different scale on oil temp.

Have only had it for a few weeks. So far everything appears to be dead on.

I'll take a few pictures when the wife gets back tonight. I have it mounted on the Steering Column right in front of the instrument panel.

I'm a new Versa owner (cvt) and interested in a group buy. I find that my rpgs, if kept below 2,000, definately are making a big difference in my mpgs but I seem to have to keep letting up on the accelerator to get the speed and rpgs kept that wayI'd rather have a tool that helps me see exactly what I should be doing (I am NOT at all versed on autos but very interested in higher mpgs, as that is a primary reason I bought the Versa.

I would be interested in a group buy if we could get a reduced price. I'd like to have one mostly for the Trip Computer functions. BTW, I noticed with our CVT, going 70 MPH pushes only 2200 RMPs!

I'm sure that more than just the V owners would be interested in a group buy. let me talk to the mod staff and find out how to handle this... I may be back with a link to a new thread.

And as far as the numbers on the coolant go, that's very normal. most automotive thermostats will open at 190 degrees or 200 degrees. In fact, you can tweak your cooling system a little bit by replacing your thermostat with one that opens at a specific temperature... although on most vehicles I suggest just buying an OEM thermostat, since they're the best match and tend also to have the best gaskets.

Thanks for the temperature spread. On getting an OEM - I don't believe the Versa has a true temperature gauge (not to mention I don't want to run all that stuff to install one. The ScanGaugeII provides what I need).

Thanks for the information.

You're right in that the V doesn't have a temperature gauge in the traditional sense. But that has nothing to do with the thermostat.

The thermostat, in any vehicle, is opened or closed simply by the temperature of the water running through it, not by any signal it is receiving from the ECU or any part of the car. In fact, the thermostat is probably about the only component left in the car that is not electronic in any way, shape, or form.

OK - Here is a picture. The image inside the image is the Computer Connection and the Cable wrapped up in the Fuse Box area.
