Car won't start. The engine is showing not enough compression and a problem in one of the cylinders. I replaced the oil myself but not often enough and have no receipts so Nissan mechanic is saying $4900 parts and labor to replace. He has not dug into it but says he is sure if he did it'd still need a replace and it would cost to look into it. It's a lease, so I'm a bit screwed. I'd welcome any advice.

Well you couldn't have said it any better yourself that you're screwed. You changed the oil yourself with no records of it whatsoever and not even as often as you should have. Yes, replacing the engine at your own cost sounds reasonable even if the oil didn't actually cause the problem. A local shop might be able to rebuild your engine cheaper. My friend had his Z24 Cavalier engine rebuilt for $2 grand once because he failed to ever change the oil on time like I repeatedly told him to but it was stupid fast and like brand new after it was rebuilt.

If it's a lease, just buy a wrecker engine from a junkyard around Nashville and change it. There are plenty of mechanics in the area. If you can't find anyone, I may be able to dig up a Nissan engineer in Smyrna that will do it for cheap.

Completely forgot about ebay and such. Great place to get a Versa engine. Most of them come out of low mileage total-outs.

He could have used plain conventional oil past 5,000 miles in heavy city driving (the worst kind for your oil) and over time, it can gunk up an engine and even kill it. Where on the other hand, someone can be putting mostly highway miles on their car using synthetic oil every 10k and the engine be perfectly fine.
