Hey guys! I left my car sitting under a tree for a couple of weeks of heavy rain and recently when I got in, I noticed a damp smell. I opened the rear left passenger door and saw that the floor mat was completely soaked. I pulled the carpet, and the after removing a piece of foam, there was at least 3 inches of water on the metal floor.

Where is this water likely coming from? Is it the door seals? Is it the window seals? Is it a blocked drain somewhere? A while ago when I would drive the car after a night of rain, I could hear water in the door. However, it was the front passenger door and when I spread out the rubber on the bottom of the door it poured out. This car does not have a sunroof.

I'm going to be purchasing new seals/weather stripping for the windows and doors. Any help would be much appreciated!

See the pics here.

The doors all have drains like your passenger door and will all overflow if they're blocked. Check your A/C drain tube, too, and poke a screwdriver into the HVAC nipple with the drain hose off to make sure nothing like a bottlecap is blocking the egress. If you don't find anything with those, it's likely you need to spend some time with a garden hose to track down the source.

Aah, since it was under a tree for a while, there were tons of leaves and mud in various places. Tomorrow, I'll check the door drains and everything else you've mentioned and see if it helps.

One other thing, since it was treed for awhile. I'm not sure how large the cowl drains are on a Skyline, but some Nissans like Versas and Titans have very tiny ones. Shine a flashlight through the cowl grating, and if you see a lot of crud, yank the cowl cover and check the drains. Keep in mind that the undercarpets on most Nissans are much thicker in front than back, so water in the back doesn't necessarily come from the back.

Yeah I found the front mats were a bit damp as well but nothing compared to the rear left. I'll check the cowling too! Thanks.

Ok so I think I figured out the issue. As you had mentioned, it was the door drains. Each and every single door had the drains completely blocked with leaves, mud, and the deteriorated weather strips. So, I think what happened was that the water pooled in the door and managed to drain between the interior door panel into the interior of the car. I even poured water where there used to be a weather strip between the window and the door and saw it coming out on the bottom of the interior panel. It even explains why I used to hear water sloshing in the car when I drove around. It was in the doors! When I cleared out the drains, you wouldn't believe how much water came out! Anyways, a two lessons learned. Replace worn weather strips ASAP, don't park under trees and keep your door drains clear!
