Car: the world's ugliest civic

Post

I was going to post a question about this car since it came to me from another shop (where they threw a fuel pump in it for no reason), but by the time I got my password reset I had already found the problem. So I'm going to document it here in case someone else runs into the same problem.

When the car came in the scanner would not communicate with the PCM and after some troubleshooting it turns out that someone had removed the fuse for the comm port. The only code it was showing was P0340 so I put a cam sensor on it without checking anything else and it still wouldn't start and showed the same code. I pulled out my meter and while testing for continuity in the wires I found that the signal wire was shorted to power somewhere in the harness. I ran a new wire from the sensor to the pin on the PCM and the car fired right up.

I was worried that the engine may have jumped timing, but according to the FSM it will not set a P0340 during cranking unless it is getting no signal from the cam sensor, it has to be running to set a P0340 for improper phase.

I hope this may help someone out in the future.

Hello

I have been dealing with a similiar issue for a three months now in which one day my car was hard to start and after a few days of this I finally took it to get a code check which told me I had a camshaft issue. I purchased a new after market one and put it in which resulted in an improvement in starting without faltering but still not where it should be. A week later the code comes back again so a mechanic friend of mine recommended I purchase the OEM part(which actually was cheaper than the after market). I put the OEM part in and it would not turn over or start for that matter.

I placed the after market back in and have been using it ever since. The car gives me more trouble on cold days and less on warm ones. I also found it starts just fine if parked in a garage. I am concerned it could be a timing chain issue but by reading your post it looks like it could just be a faulty signal comming from the wiring. I have started to look for a wire harness but none of the regular parts shops I know of have it. I will try the dealer.

What are your thoughts?
