Ugh. Took the 2007 Pathfinder into the dealership to check out the 40mph shudder, and the lack of heat in the cabin at idle. They quickly confirmed my fears that I need a new radiator and transmission. I have 97,595 miles, so it will cost me $3k for the "copay." I was planning to get a new car soon (to accommodate upcoming family needs :ohno: ), but was not counting on this. Do I have any other options? ie:

1) Flush the transmission and radiator
2) Take the car to my normal (cheaper) mechanic - see if they can do anything cheaper for this (probably not).
3) Trade it and negotiate the work into the price of the trade in.
4) Pay the $3k and sell the vehicle soon, hoping that it's a selling point for a prospective buyer

Anything?

Just curious. What actually broke? Something in the radiator and trans overheat?

Maybe another option would be to try to find a trans from a junkyard and give it to your cheeper mechanic to put it in? Idk how far back yoy could go though, there won't be much cuz 2007 is still pretty new in junk yard years.

It sounds like the transmission cooling line running thru the radiator failed. Cooling system is pressurized, which effectively pumps coolant/water into the transmission cooling line, which then gets into the transmission. The water /fluid form a "milkshake" in the transmission.

For expensive repairs a second opinion is always good.

The first thing needed is a new radiator and cooling system flush. You can have your mechanic put in a new radiator ( probably better quality than Nissans) and look at your transmission fluid while doing that. You'll probably save some money over the dealership on this work. He may suggest trying a Trans flush, or not. You will have to rely on his expertise there. Good chance it's too late though.

You mentioned "Copay". If that means you have an extended drivetrain warranty, it is probably not a Nissan warranty, but an aftermarket warranty. If that is the case, your mechanic can probably put a rebuilt transmission in and bill the insurance company. That will cost less than the dealer, probably by a fair amount, so your copay would be much less. Those warranties typically let you select the mechanic.

You can go used transmission. Log onto car-part.com, enter your vehicle info, select the correct transmission type (AWD, 4x2, etc.) and you will see used transmission prices. Probably figure 750.00 to 1000.00 labor to do a swap, depending on you mechanic, locale, etc. Those will typically have a 90 day warranty, parts only. If it fails, you get a replacement used transmission free, but you must pay the labor again. You would let the mechanic buy the used transmission himself - he will tell you what warranty he can give you.

Or, you find a shady looking character named Guido, hand him 500.00 and the keys, and tell him you never want to see the car again. Wait a day or two and report it stolen. :naughty:

Nissan has an extended warranty on 2005-2010 Pathfinders, Frontiers and XTerras for the trans cooler failure.
The term 'co-pay' comes into play if you have more than 80,000 miles on it.
Anything under that and the repairs are free.
The co-pay is $2,500 if you have between 80K and 90K miles,
and $3,000 if you have under 100K.
More than 100,000 miles and you are out of luck.
Still sucks though.

That is good info - I had not heard that.

So its a known problem. I think if I was driving a 2005+ I might just go ahead and put a radiator in it for the peace of mind.

Hopefully we will hear how it works out.

Absolutely.
If I had one of those, I'd do exactly that. Change the rad before it blows.
