The TPMS sensors, one in each tire have a battery. Each battery sends a signal to the main computer. over a period of time they lose their strength. Cold weather is hard on the batteries shortening their life also. Replacing the batteries is not possible. The whole sending unit (all 4 tires to make them equal again) must be replaced. Prices will vary (dealerships $700.00). I replaced my tires recently this spring and a familiar problem with the dash indicator flashing for a minute and then going solid. Had it reset several times and the same thing happened. Replaced the sensors at Discount Tire (all 4) for $260.00. Had them reset the computer and the problem so far is gone. Amen, because it was a real pain to see the dash light blink and go solid every time I started my Versa.

How do these sensors effect running two sets of tires - like a winter and summer set on their own seperate rims ?

Are you referring to two sets of sensors? I have sensors in the summer wheels but not in the winter wheels. When you start to drive on wheels without sensors the system recognizes it as a malfunctioning TPMS system and the warning light goes on, which happens every time you start the car. Once you put the wheels with sensors back on it detects the signal again and the light will not go on. No calibration or re-learning process is needed.
