My wife was caught in a flash flood in her Versa today. Water made it almost all the way to the door handles. We got it moved and its just waiting for the insurance adjuster. We did talk to him he said in most cases they would total out the vehicle. What kind of damage should I expect. Sucks to lose the car with only 3000 miles on it. But I have heard if they don't total it I am in a world of trouble.

You want to hope they total it, otherwise insurance needs to pay for it to be completely stripped and everything (I mean everything) to be cleaned/dried/sanatized and/or replaced.

Your damage is all electrical could be damaged, it not now, then later after water soaks in. Engine, assuming it was running is probably done for since it sucked in water. Then there's the interior that will mold/mildew. Etc, etc.

It is still running. But it has every warning light in the dash on and it making a strange noise from the engine. There is a thumping noise from the front driver side. When we got it unstuck as we got it off the road a wave of water would travel back and forth from the back to front.

"Funny noise in the engine".. like a banging noise? If so, you've got water in a cylinder and the noise you're hearing is the compression stroke slamming that water into the head.

So you're looking at a new engine, new wiring harnesses, new ECU, new BCM, probably a new TCU, new front suspension and brake components (odd thump from the front, you probably got some damage up there), and the interior needs to be stripped and replaced from stem to stern. at the very least.

Yes, pray they total it... then you can start from scratch.

A friend of mine did the same to a 2004 Taurus last year. She wouldn't let the insurance "Total" it because she would not get the cost of a new car from the insurance company like she thought she should. Basically she thought her three year old Taurus was worth as much as a brand new one. She also figured that if it started it was still a good car. She asked us, at work, what to do and we told her what everyone is telling you- "make them total it". She said something about them not letting her keep the car if it were "Totaled" and I said "Who cares! Its been flooded!"

We told her and told her to just start over but she wouldn't listen. She took it to the dealership and they told her to just get another car. The next day she comes to work with a smirk and a story about how she told them off for trying to rip her; she told them to fix her damn car no matter what. Well long story short they did fix her car and when she went to pick it up they told her it cost $4,000. Of course it still has problems all the time. Also: I am almost positive that she ended up paying the repairs herself but that is just something I heard from another co-worker.

She was an idiot but the point of the story is that even after 4,000 worth of repairs it still wasn't fixed so just hope they total it.

Not sure about the noise, just going buy what my wife told me. I found out the back hatch wont open anymore. The insurance company wanted us to leave the car at my wife work and they would be by in a few days to take a look at it. They got her a rental car. We tried to tell them the area is not that nice of a area, but they insisted. So most likely when she gets there tomorrow we are going to see:

A: It was stolen.

B: Hookers broke the windows and have been stinking up my wet mildewy car during the course of their transactions.

C: Crackhead asleep on the roof.

Who cares its on their dime now.

It will be totalled. Most flood damaged cars are totalled, I'd guess damages are well over 12k, at least.

Not to mention the damages you may not see for several years from now, like rust, as water is now trapped in the structural channels, and other places it was never meant to be.

Cars are designed to channel rainfall off of the car, so that it doesn't get places that it shouldn't. Cars aren't designed to prevent a flood from getting in those places, like Bishop was talking about. Consider that when the car was flooded, it was submerged in water, taking on water in places rainfall could never reach.

Sorry to hear about the flooded Versa...

If you were to keep that thing, it would become a mold bucket. Especially in Texas in the summer when it gets hot and steamy in the car. You gotta figure that the water has soaked into the fabric on the doors, seats, carpet.

When I used to install auto glass, I worked on this old Camaro or something, I can't remember what it was now, but they had a leak in their rain channel around the windshield. The water would go in under the carpet and had formed a huge pocket in the back seat area. I spent an hour trying to help them out by vacuuming out the water. I couldn't get it all and there was not a nice smell in there.

Remember folks, mold is the silent killer. Or maybe I just have bad allergies.

Volkswagens (especially the '85-'92 Golf and Jettas) were NOTORIOUS for leaks. They all take on a strong musty smell. I counted TWELVE leaks in my old GTI. I gutted the interior, fixed the leaks, replaced the carpet underpadding, reassembled it, and the smell went away and never came back.

No offense, but rain leaks are way different than flooding. You can't just dry out the electrical system and expect it to work... and it sounds like water has invaded the engine, so that will have to be rebuilt if not replaced.

We will find out today. The insurance adjuster will be out today. There has been a steady stream of water pouring from under the car for the last two days. We looked at it this morning and the condensate that is usually on the outside its all built up on everything inside.

I am sad & happy to report @ 3:00 pm Central Standard time on 10/17/07 my onyx blue Nissan Versa SL was declared died and towed away. Now only thing to worry about is the money, but I have gap insurance so I am covered. Thank everyone for your advice.

btw just wondering...how much did you charge you for that GAP insurance?

i denied it from my dealer because he wanted too much for it. first he said $800, i said no, then he said $600. i still said no. then signed me up for it anyways. before i signed i saw it and i was like HELL NO! so he said that he thought i said yes and changed it for me. i was flamed at this point.

I wasnt going to pay anymore then $150 for it because i know for a fact that Acura only charges $115 for their GAP insurance (my gf's mom works for them) and the dealership makes most of there profit from the insurance because they only get it for like $50.

I will have to look cause I got it with the extended warranty. I think it was like $150.00. But since I am not paying for any of it now I got a good deal. I have only owned the car since the start of September. One payment into the car and its gone.

We paid $175. I was against it but my wife wanted it so you know who made the final decision.

The October Curse strikes again! And strikes another blue onyx vehicle... hmmm...

Gap insurance is a good thing if you don't put a lot down... as in most areas, GAP insurance pays the difference between what insurance pays and what you OWE... so you walk away paying nothing, the car gets paid off.

I was not offered, nor did I purchase GAP because I put $3500 down. I am about even in my car, if it were to get wrecked today I would owe roughly my deductible anyway, so at this point it would be useless to me.
