I just bought a 2007 Maxima with 8000 miles on it. When I'm at lower RPMs/speeds, I hear a "winding" or "faint grinding" noise coming from the front. I can't hear it when the radio is on, at higher speeds, or at idle. It almost seems like the CVT is trying to find the right ratio. It happens especially while coasting at lower speeds. Also, I hear it initially when applying brakes at low speeds/RPMs, then once I apply full brakes almost to a stop it goes away. Is this typical of a CVT? Thanks for your help.

Did you buy it from a dealer? If so, how long ago?

I bought it used, one week ago with 8000 miles on it. I am taking it to a dealer tomorrow morning to see if they think there is something wrong or if it is just normal. I found a video of a cvt transmission w/ sound:

http://videos.streetfire.net/v...6.htm

I think it is the same sound as what this is making. Hopefully that means this is all normal. Does anyone else ever hear this? Any feedback? Should i be able to hear that sound from inside? It is very faint, but still audible with radio off at low rpms and speeds.

So I took the car to the dealer, and they say that they think it was from the metal support brace in the drivers side A pillar. They used silicone glue to glue it down and claim that they thought the sound stopped.

I got the car back and at first it seemed fine, but now I can hear the noise again.

I swear it is from something mechanical, not just a rattle. Can this be from the CVT?

What should I do? Would they be able to pin point it down to the A-pillar and not be wrong about location?

i dont know that i have ever "heard the cvt" i do drive a fair amount of them at work but i dont really listen for them. it is possible for the cvt to make some noise. if it is faint i would hold off worring about it for the time being. nissan's warranty on the cvt is 60mo/60k miles.

Hello ... !

Alright so after posting my issue in a couple of nissan forums i came across this thread.

i am having a similar noise coming from the front drivers side of the car.

i watched the video on street fire and even though it's very similar i'm still not sure if it's my CVT or not.

i don't hear the noise everyday. i may hear it a week straight and not hear it for a day or two. or vice versa.

i hear the noise when braking and until i come to a complete stop.

and i also hear it when making a moving right turn while tapping on the brakes before the turn.

its souns like a grinding noise with a funky spring like sound to it.

does this sound like the noise you're having ?

Its so hard to really pinpoint what and where the noise is coming from. I feel like its possible it is a transmission type noise, but the mechanic told me there shouldnt be any way I would hear that unless the transmission was basically breaking in half.

It sounds like you hear the noise at the same time as I do. (Coasting at lower RPMs/speeds, braking at lower speeds etc.) stops when at idle, and cant really hear it at higher speeds/rpms....

the approach im taking is i will wait it out until my next service and possibly take it back in to see if they still think it is coming from teh drivers side A-pillar.

is yours a 2007? did you buy yours used or new? are you worried about the sound or just hear it enough to investigate?

thanks

Wanted to give an update:

I brought the car in again to Nissan and took a ride with their master-tech. He said he couldnt hear anything.

So I decided to experiment, and it seems like when I hear the noise, then put the car in neutral while moving, it goes away. This makes me think that it is coming from the transmission.

What do you guys think?

Can it be a bad thing I can hear it? Are CVT transmission noisier than regular automatics? Can it be normal to hear it?

It sounds like the video I posted above.

To determine if its normal or not, ask them to drive another one on the lot prefferably one with comparable miles and see if it is just charicteristic to the car. The tech may hear the noise but to him its a normal noise for the car therefore he does not hear anything. We do that with some of our customers to set their mind at ease for what they are hearing.
