Hey everybody --

So I am new here but have always searched the site-- finally have a question if anyone is of any help -- I can't say thank you enough.

Story - two days ago I went to the golf course, I had noticed the past 2-3 weeks that my A/C would intermittenly turn off, particularly at a stand still (idle), but when I drive it starts to becomes normally cool. Back to the story of getting to the course, my cousin knows the in's and out's of vehicles and was going to borrow my car, while there he was seeing as to why there is no A/C comming through - just warm regular air. Well after adjusting the temp up and down just a few degree's we noticed smoke under the hood, just a little bit and immediately turned off the car. Popped the hood and saw the free-on was comming out of the "over=flow", after we let it cool off and everything looked and smelled ok I decided to have it towed to a family friend my dad suggested who didn't live too far (BIG FN MISTAKE I FEEL NOW  ), so he replaced the thermostat, and he said its not the thermostat.. now Im bugging out because I feel I should have had it towed to a garage or something -- mind you this guy has been a mechanic his whole life and has a pretty sweet garage at his house- legit really, but I dont know if he is really familiar with Infiniti's. Thats all the detail as far as the car gave me before having it towed, any suggetions? or things I should know about? Ive had the car for 1 1/2, bought it from a used reputable dealership -- not infiniti dealership. 65,000 miles. Not sure if its under warranty anymore? .... help please?? :wtf2:

THANK YOU!!! :wavey:

What did your temp gauge say?

Freon doesn't come out of the overflow... maybe you meant coolant?

Don't mess around. Heat can crack your engine block (if it hasn't already).

TEMP gauge was all the way up, I meant coolant -- I just realized I typed "free-on" sorry dude. I type faster than I think..

Also-- Found out none of the fans work... if that helps diagnosis?

Changing the thermostat would make sense, and doesn't require Infiniti. Checking the fans first would make sense too, but if you think a tech at Infiniti would never screw up and go straight for the thermostat, you are mistaken. That having been said, this thread was recently at the top of the list, and the particular post I am linking to could very well be incredibly relevant:

Here is a story about my previous vehicle: 1999 Acura TL

Went to post office but they weren't going to open for another 30 minutes. It was HOT out and I stayed in my car until they came back. I had the AC on and after 15 minutes of waiting i noticed the air was getting warm. Looked at my temp gauge and it was all the way up. I stopped the car of course.

I found out one of my fans for the AC (it was on the right of the radiator) didn't turn on. My AC would provide cool air while moving but at a stand still my car would immediately start over heating IF i had the AC on. With the AC off my car would not over heat.

To fix the problem, I went to a Junkyard and got a fan for 30 bucks. replaced it and it turned on. Didn't over heat again.

My questing to you is: Have you tried driving the car with the AC off? If so did it still over heat?

You said it would start heating up when you were at a stand still which makes me think you had the same problem I had before.
